Product description Two very different suitors compete for the love of a young widow, and in the process bring warmth to an otherwise cold and bleak Christmas holiday. Janet Leigh portrays Connie, a woman who has lost her husband in the war and must now raise her small son alone. Nearly destitute, the mother and son more keenly feel their need as the holiday season approaches; Connie cannot afford the toy of her son's dreams: an electric train set. Then a stranger appears and changes their lives. Steve (Robert Mitchum), a drifter with dreams of building boats in which to sail away, wins Connie's heart from another suitor (Wendell Corey) and fulfills the little boy's wish by surprising him with the electric train. A wonderful holiday romance! 1949, Black and White, Hi-Fi, Not Rated, Approximate Running Time 87 Minutes. .com One of the lesser holiday movies, this 1949 comedy stars Janet Leigh as a war widow who can't afford to buy her son a toy train for Christmas. A veteran (Robert Mitchum) who happens to be standing by in a department store overhears her plight and offers to purchase the toy, thus setting into motion a series of funny complications. Wendell Corey plays Leigh's suspicious, condescending boyfriend, whose jealousy compounds Mitchum's problems, and Harry Morgan is very good as a night-court judge trying to make sense of everything that happens. The movie didn't do so well at the box office at the time of its release, but it has gained an affectionate fan base over the years. Don't expect Miracle on 34th Street, but as a spirited lark for Yuletide, this is a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh

Great plot and theme
This relatively unknown gem from the classic movie era has a great cast and plot. It is not a cookie-cutter Hollywood plot, but actually has some important lessons in it. Robert Mitchum is quite good in this!

Romatic holiday movie
Janet Leigh plays Connie Ennis, a shopper that runs into Steve Mason, played by Robert Mitchum, a seasonal clerk. Connie accidentally gets Steve fired upon requesting he break store policy in returning an item that she had previously bought. To make up for it, Connie spends the day with Steve and the two start to fall in love. However, Connie has a steady boyfriend and a son and is still struggling to let go of her deceased husband. Steve becomes a great friend with Connie's son but the web starts getting very tangled and Connie has to decide who she will end up with. This is a fun holiday movie, the movies, the lights, the scenery, the clothes are awesome. It is sometimes so nice to look into the vintage movies where everything seems comfortable even when the characters are going through emotional struggles.

Not just a Christmas film, a touching romantic classic
This movie contains a surprising performance from Janet Leigh, known primarily for being murdered in Psycho. In this film, she is gives an endearing, tender portrayal of a single mother, wounded by the loss of her husband. Her son is similarly wounded, not because his father is dead; he was too young to remember him. He is more hurt by his mother's failure to move on. Leigh has a boring relationship with the man next door who has been in love with her for years. He asks her to marry him regularly, buts she never agrees nor turns him down outright. Cue the entrance of Robert Mitchum and his welcome but unusual facial features. Mitchum's character is quirky and charming but tough; a little bit of the bad guy edge Mitchum is known for comes through here, but never does it go too far. The characters emerge as real people, not paper cut outs typical for this genre of film. This is a definite must for anyone interested in classics, Christmas movies, or just good films.

The perfect Christmas Movie that is totally satisfying.
Rarely was Mitchum this good.Oh yes he dominated in movies like cape fear and night of the hunter. But in this almost b movie he gives what I think is just about his best performanceRarely was he this assured.Holiday affair is perfect. Yes it's Mitchums movie. Who can keep this massive man down. But it's so much more than merely a vehicle for himIt's a complete movie that's very articulate and so satisfying.Mitchum plays the gentleman here who's not above being a bit naughty. Above all he's honest and decent and in love. There's no more satisfying Christmas movie than Holiday Afffair..It stands alongside Cary grant in the bishops wife and that can't be a bad thingHoliday affair is perfect fun.Mitchum gives an actors class here. There's are some wonderful scenes here. Just wait for the scene at the police station. It's magical in every way. This is a movie for puristsPerfect movie ams prefect Mitchum. Who could want more.

Brilliant
A wonderful movie, all you need at Xmas is this and 'Its a Wonderful Life' and you've cracked it. I've been awaiting this release for ages. Robert Mitcham and Janet Leigh are superb and for once Wendell Corey is just right as the miserable boy friend. Buy it, this is one of the few 10 star movies.

Sweet and Funny!
I enjoyed watching this old fashioned romantic comedy- the story was predictable (Happy ending) and felt like I'd seen it before- Miracle on 34th street although Janet Leigh does believe in Christmas, Robert Mitchum does have to convince to fall in love. There are some funny scenes played by Robert Mitchum but did seem strange that he wasn't a cowboy with a horse! and a young Janet Leigh 10 years before Psycho was made.A nice Sunday afternoon watch!

hard to find film
This movie is my all time favourite Christmas film. As an overweight woman, I don't always follow the fads and trends in the film industry but this one is a gem. Seldom have i been able to find a copy of this film.

Holiday Affair-(The Hollywood film.)
Robert Mitchum has long been one of my favourite Hollywood stars. "Holiday Affair" shows a lighter side of his acting talent but is nevertheless classic Mitchum. A lesser known film really but well worth a watch if you are a Mitchum fan especially.
