The Black Dog Summer on the Vineyard Cookbook

My friend and I first ate at the Black Dog Tavern several times in 1973. It had only been open for a couple of years. The food was very good and the restaurant was very unspoiled by huge crowds. If it had not been for Amizon, I probably would not have been aware that this, their first cookbook, was now available.I have tried several of the recipes and my favorites are the Crunchy Pecan Chicken, Blueberry Banana Pancakes and several of the delicious deserts and chowders. However, I must say if you lived in a seaport area where fresh seafood was readily available, you certainly would have constant use for these wonderful from-the-sea dishes. I really enjoyed the beautiful photos and commentary which reminds me of my many enjoyable times on the Vineyard.I have friends who recently dined at the Black Dog and they said they enjoyed the food but did not enjoy the long wait to be seated. However, they did come back with yet another T-shirt and a mug with the Black Dog. This cookbook is a personal delight.

I like cookbooks with lots of beautiful pictures and this one rates five stars for its pictures and interesting stories. I like recipes that use ingredients most of us have in our kitchens although recipes with the more exotic ingredients are welcome, too. Recipes have to be easy to prepare and not too time-consuming. Black Dog scores points here, also. But, the bottom line is, are you happy with the end result of all your labors and would you make the recipe again. So far, Black Dog fulfills this requirement with the recipes I have tried. For instance, the clam chowder recipe is excellent. I highly recommend this cookbook. I think it would make a great gift for the novice as well as "seasoned" cook.

I'm a cookbook hound (really, not going for the pun here), and many of them end up sitting on my shelf without my ever having made more than one or two things out of them. Black Dog, though, is definitely not a dust collector in my home. There are so many great things to cook in it (and they all turn out excellent) yet it's not overwhelming. Maybe it's because I grew up in a place that's not unlike the Vineyard, but I find this book continually useful and fun. I've even given it as a gift twice. And, not for nothing, the photography in it is really beautiful.

This cookbook was a shower gift. Our family has used it for years and every recipe is just wonderful although the desert recipes can be a bit tricky -- the lemon squares are measured for a restaurant serving -- but they are wonderful. I've used more of these recipes than any other - except for Ina Garten.
