I was not happy with the choice to read to my granddaughters 2nd grade class. After reading it a few times and realizing how wonderfully it told the story for black history month! I chose to read it to my other granddaughters forth grade class as well. Both classes loved it. I will continue reading it whenever called upon or I will volunteer when needed. Great book for younger kids to get to feel what life may have been then. Thanks

Great book
A very nice simplification of the historical woman's story. Well written in age-appropriate terms, but not shrinking back from talking about enslavement and the (literal) pain and angst of it.The author's lengthy note at the end made several of the parts of the story much clearer, esp. including the bit about being set free 'a year early'.An excellent addition to a well-rounded set of books for any child.

wonderful picture book of a true heroine!
I am from the area where Sojourner Truth lived, so I am very familiar with her story. I also am very pleased that the statue was finally established in her honor...what a wonderful tribute! I plan to give the book to my eight year old granddaughter.

Books Are Everything
Purchased this for my granddaughter but recently discovered it in my daughter's sixth grade classroom! Now many who cannot afford such beautiful books can enjoy it.

Ms. Turner has written a powerful book. It illustrates Ms. Truth’s life in a kid-friendly way. It references the fact that slaves were beaten, but emphasizes how families were torn apart and how very very hard slaves worked in bad conditions. It explains that Ms. Truth had a hard life, but she refused to let it beat her. It is an incredible story of courage and the difference one person can make if they speak up. The illustrations are very well done and compliment the text nicely.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

A True Heroine most of us know little about
I'm very happy to have found a story of Sojourner Truth's life that is suitable for my grandchildren. It's a great addition to a collection of biographies of heroic women - or heroes in general.
