Notre-Dame de Paris

Un grand œuvre qui est plein de plaisirs. L'histoire est vraiment très connue mais ce n'est pas un roman qui s'occupe beaucoup avec l'histoire. C'est plutôt un roman d'idées. L'architecture de Paris de 15ème siècle, la vie quotidien de rois, de mendiants, de poètes, de prêtres, de voleurs, des avocats et quelquefois des rats et des chèvres- tous et plus ont leur place dans ce roman qui veut se placer dans le grand théâtre du monde. Je trouve les grandes diversions, détournements plus délectables que les chapitres qui se concernent avec l’histoire quelquefois. 15eme siècle Paris à vol d’ oiseau, un chapitre qui mets en comparaison l’imprimeur- une technologie qui venait d’être découvrir- et l’architecture et leurs rôles vitales dans l’histoire d’humanité, un autre sur l’alchimie, et bien sur un chapitre magnifique sur l’architecture de Notre Dame de Paris….l’écrivain nous édifie avec des mots si beaux, un style si légère qu’on se perd vraiment dans ces temps bien passés.Un œuvre inoubliable.

Though, even with this sadness, the novel affected me so much in good ways. L'histoire promet le bonheur mais il donne seulement la tragedie et le creve-coeur. Meme avec la tristesse, ce roman m'a affecter beaucoup, mais pas tout negativement. This edition is so enjoyable to read. The text is, mercifully, of a point size that is not miniscule and a strain on the eyes.The Note Added to the Definitive Version by Hugo helps to set in place the story which reflects Hugo's love of the romano-gothic architecture of the middle ages and his abhorrence for the misguided and taste less modifications to the majestic edifice which is clearly the a crucial character of the novel.The story itself is rich in detail and sumptuous in its descriptions. It is truly a revelation to read the great work that not even Laughton's 1939 film could fully capture. - just read the description of La Esmeralda dancing for the crowd, the parallels drawn between the difformed Quasimodo and the interior of the cathedral as two souls inextricably melded; enjoy the understanding voice of Hugo that resonates with the handling of each character. The whole thing is a richly coloured tapestry and a marvellous read, esp. in the original French.

Uno stile incredibile. Toccante, avvincente, persino divertente in molti punti. Tragico, comunque. Victor Hugo è uno di migliori autori mai vissuti!

I liked the content of the book, especially that it was the complete French version. Very pleased overall.

Notre Dame de Paris has been my favorite story since growing up so my opinion is definitely bias. It's a great read!

Faultless French language, will definitely test your knowledge. Beautiful scenes such as the mother protecting her newly found daughter and of course the inevitable romantic and sad ending. All this sometimes lost in hugo's dissertation on religion and passion. Hugo originally wrote the novel to convince Parisians to save the crumbling Notre Dame cathedral. He definitely achieved his goal as there is a 30 minute queue (at best) when visiting the cathedral. If you can put up with romanticism and are up to learning about medieval Paris then this book is for you. If you are a pragmatic, must-act, 21st century kind of person then this could be your worst nightmare. If you want to test your French you could still read the action packed passages or just read flaubaire or Maupassant.

It was given as a gift and she was very happy to receive the French version as she had a very hard time to find one.
