A nice compilation of writings
I am using this book for my Spanish American Literature class. It is definitely challenging to read. The text has helpful translation notes, but sometimes I am still confused. The literature is often on a college level so it does stretch ones abilities at comprehension. Maybe it is because sometimes even reading college literature in English I miss nuances...Here is an example of the text level: "Yo ya no oigo lo que sigue diciendo Esteban. Nos hemos puesto en fila para bajar la barranca y él va mero adelante. Se ve que ha agarrado a la gallina por las patas y la zangolotea a cada rato, para no golpearle la cabeza contra las piedras." page 217.[Already I don't hear what Esteban keeps saying. We went in file down the slope and he goes just forward. He sees that he has grabbed the hen by her feet and moves it with every moment in order not to hit her head against the rocks.]There are also historical documents as well. I hope this book helps me learn Spanish better. It's definitely not for beginners.

Cut cover
A rental that is not nearly as bad as the Espana book but the cover is cut. I guess I expected clean good books that I would feel comfortable returning in as good of shape as I received.

Great literary content; especially footnotes/etc.
I would highly recommend this book, especially if you're English-speaking/reading and proficient in Spanish, trying to become more fluent - there're a fair amount of great writers presented here, plenty of historical 'better-than-filler' to educate yourself on, as well as a ton of worthwhile footnotes for more complex translations and other...

Excellent overviews of literature in Spanish
Panoramas Literarios: America Hispana v. 2 Panoramas Literarios: Espana v. 1 These texts were developed for University Students of Spanish in North American universities. The text is in Spanish with a short Introduction in English. Each has sections corresponding to the various literary periods and then introductions to and a selection from the work of key writers. There are a few omissions in the last section (particularly Mario Vargas Llosa) but this probably reflects the time the volumes were originally written, 1998. Both provide an excellent source of reading material in original Spanish for the advanced student and for any reader of Spanish wishing to get to know the literature and main works. The selections have difficult words glossed in the margin in English and there is a glossary of technical terms in English and a Spanish-English dictionary at the end.An informative, interesting and worthwhile read.
