Farce, Heroism, Humor and Apocalypse
It’s Ankh Morpork again and things are as wretched, dirty, disheveled and motheaten as usual. Suddenly a boy wonder (Coin) arrives at the Unseen University. Coin is the eighth son of an eighth son. His father mostly died when Coin was an infant, but he still would make most parents look good by comparison. It is not long before everything in Ankh Morpork is bright and shiny and that is just the beginning of the disaster. Sourcery is a novel of Discworld. The Discworld novels fall into different categories: Tiffany Aching, Rincewind, the three witches, Sam Vines and the guards, and Death. Each book focuses on one of them, although they cross over and pop up in each others' books all the time. It is best if you start from the beginning of a particular grouping and work your way through, otherwise you'll miss a lot of inside jokes, references, etc. There are charts on the internet that will show you the groupings. You can trust Terry Pratchett to not be too linear and to not be predictable. Sourcery is an early novel of Rincewind. Rincewind is a wizard with little mastery of magic whose feels that his main talent is staying alive in the background of his surroundings. He is also the master of the luggage. He views himself as fearful and not heroic: in other words, the perfect person to save the world. Like all of the Discworld books, the tone is satirical and clever. This book did not make me laugh out loud like Wee Free Men, but it was amusing. Anytime the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse show up in a Discworld novel, it is seriously humorous. Somehow, Terry Pratchett makes all the nonsense work. If you are someone who cannot smile at puns like “martial lore” or “wizards were wazzards” might not fully appreciate Discworld even though most of the cleverness is more sophisticated. Silly farce is also a major force. These books do not contain any scenes, language, or images that would rate even a PG-13 rating at the movies. If a reader does not have sufficient maturity, much of the book will be wasted, because you won’t get the jokes or understand the satire. I count myself lucky to still have so many novels of Discworld ahead of me. Terry Pratchett was brilliant and the master of a fantasy sub-genre that probably belongs to him alone. The Tiffany Aching books remain my favorites, perhaps because they were my first, but probably because of the wee free men.

Wine and Song. Forget the Women.
Concerning the delights of wine, women, and song, wizards can drink and croon with the worst of us (thank the gods karaoke hasn't been invented on Discworld), but the middle pleasure is strictly forbidden. This book deals with the consequences of two wizards mixing it up with the fairer sex.The first wizard, Ipslore the Red fathers the eighth son of an eighth son, who is a wizard squared, i.e. a sourcerer. The Lore strictly forbids wizards to breed, for fear of sourcery, because the last time it appeared on Discworld, the Apocraplypse (Pratchett's spelling) was narrowly averted. When Ipslore's sourcerous (Pratchett's spelling) son crashes through the gates of the Unseen University, even the gargoyles have sense enough to flee, although not the majority of the wizards. The second wizard, Rincewind the Inept falls in love (as does his Luggage) with the daughter of a temple dancer for some mad god. She enters the narrative while breaking into the Unseen University and stealing the Archmage's hat. Rincewind meets Conina while drinking himself under the table at Ankh-Morpork's coolest tavern, the Mended Drum. He soon discovers, after the requisite bloody bar fight, that his new companion also happens to be the daughter of Cohen the Barbarian. Her secret dream is to become a hairdresser, but she has to work hard at controlling her reflexes when she has a sharp object, e.g. scissors, comb, or a broken bottle in her hand. The Discworld novels starring the cowardly wizard, Rincewind were never my favorites, but "Sourcery" also features the Librarian (who happens to be an orangutan), and a whole horde of inept wizards who suddenly turn ept when the Sourcerer appears in their midst. One of my favorite scenes occurs when a newly empowered wizard turns Ankh-Morpork's Patrician into a small yellow lizard.Naturally the wizards immediately go to war with each other to determine who is the most powerful. Only Rincewind, Conina, and Nijel the Destroyer, son of Harebut the Provision Merchant can save Discworld from their sourcerous folly. With a little help from the Librarian.

Don’t buy the kindle version
This is a Diskworld novel. If you’ve read any of them, you know what you’re going to get, and if you like the Rincewind ones you’ll probably like this.BUT, BUY THE BOOK! I bought the kindle version instead and it’s got quite a few typos, which I’ve not experienced at all in the paperbacks. It’s obviously not been properly proofread. The author’s trademark footnote asides are also almost inaccessible on a kindle paperwhite and the difficulty in reading them (on a separate screen) spoils the timing and the moment.Kindle is fine for some stuff, but not Pratchett.

Fantastic as always
All this books and stuff, that isn’t what it should all be about. What we need is real wizardry. There was an eighth son of an eighth son. He was, quite naturally, a wizard. And there it should have ended. However (for reasons we’d better not go into), he had seven sons. And then he had an eighth son… a wizard squared…a source of magic…a Sourcerer.Unseen University has finally got what it wished for: the most powerful wizard on the disc. Which, unfortunately, could mean that the death of all wizardry is at hand. And that the world is going to end, depending on whom you listen to. Unless of course one inept wizard can take the University’s most precious artefact, the very embodiment of magic itself, and deliver it halfway across the disc to safety…SynopsisBefore I start this review just let me point out that it’s not a misspelling in the title of this book but merely Terry’s play on words. This is the fifth book of the discworld series and a Rincewind book, the book takes many sartirical swipes at some of the biggest known fantasy books for example Lord of the Rings, Narnia, The Tempest and many more. Unlike many satires this one also has a fantastic story of its own.The story starts with a wizard and his son who is an eighth son of an eighth son of an eighth son. Coins father cheats death by making himself part of his staff that’s he gave to Coin as an infant. When Coin reaches ten his father uses his wizardry to try and destroy the Unseen University and the world. However, he didn’t count on Rincewind, his sidekick Luggage, the orangutan librarian, a wizards hat, Corina the daughter of Cohen the barbarian, an adventurer whose learning adventuring from a book and a genie who doesn’t follow the normal genie pattern. What ensues is a journey to save the Unseen University and maybe the world too.Pratchetts humour comes through more strongly here and the fifth book of the discworld starts to show some of what was was come in his later books. The start of the book says ” This book does not contain a map. Please feel free to draw your own”. I couldn’t have found a better quote to describe the discworld series so far. Rules that are established in one book don’t follow through into another. Character traits and appearances change and there isn’t much structure! However I never expected anything else from Terry and this is what makes his books uniquely funny.Once again I gave 5 stars to this book and swiftly moved onto the next book in the series

Try to Avoid Sourcerers
There's magicAnd then there is sourceryTrust me, you do not want sourcery! The arrival of a Sourcerer at Unseen University leads rapidly to All-out Thaumaturgical War, which is not an ideal way to spend the weekend. What more can I say? It's a Terry Pratchett book, an early one, so of course I love it

Sourcery is pure Magic
It’s many years since I read this book. It has raw magic, barbarians and Rincewind once more running away and somehow ending in battles to protect the future of the Disc World. If you like your fantasy steeped in humour and humanity, you’ll love the Disc. Enjoy.

Excels
Once again Terry excels, once you pick up a Discworld book and Rincewind appears you know your in for a great time, it may be called Sourcery but really it's the Rincewind novel with the wizards at their very best.Nd
