More than three stars worth of affection
I've got a lot of affection for this movie. More than the three stars worth of affection that my rating might imply. This movie is an intriguing combination: it's reasonably engaging and suspenseful, nicely acted, and its script contains some of the most cringeworthy, My-First-Movie-type of amateurish dialog that you'll ever hear. Tens of millions of feature-length movies have been made to date. The dialog in Tomb Raider (2018) is the 4th worst dialog out of all of those movies. And that's quite an achievement. My regard for the film stems from those positive aspects. My three-star rating is because of the aspects that let it down.Incidentally, this is not a Tomb Raider movie. I've been a devotee of the Tomb Raider franchise since Tomb Raider II (the 1997 PC game). And while I wholeheartedly do feel that Alicia Vikander would make an excellent Lara Croft if she were given the chance to do so, this particular movie doesn't give her that chance. It's a respectable movie of its genre; but it's *not* a Tomb Raider/Lara Croft movie. It just doesn't have the elements, the tone/gravitas, nor (quite) the Saturday matinee patina.Since I have a lot of affection for the movie, I'm going to obsessively chart some of the more noteworthy moments (including examples of that astonishingly bad dialog). :)0:00:50 A (for the most part) nice introduction to the Himiko character (based loosely on the historical figure).0:01:30 "[...] on an old map that no-one else has". This is an example of the tell-don't-show anti-pattern kind of storytelling that consistently undermines this movie. How feasible is it that no-one else has it? And how do you know that? Well, you just make it so in a Supreme-Being-like Let-there-be-light wave of the hand. No. That's not good enough. There's a certain charm to it that's paradoxically part of this movie's appeal. But, really, it's not good enough.0:01:36 "[...] and she's there". Same as above. How do you know?0:01:42 "I have to get there first". Why? If no-one else knows where the island is? Why not just destroy your map? Or, if you must get there, what exactly are you going to do?0:02:00 The shots cross the line again and again and again. Makes it very difficult to follow.0:05:00 I don't know what the point is of this aborted romantic bid, except possibly to say "Lara is attractive enough that at least one person wants to date her." Which was already obvious. This scene is never called back, and never pays off. It's dead weight and should have been cut.0:14:40 In an act of gross professional negligence, Jaffe hands over the puzzle before the papers have been signed. It's just not believable that he'd do that. If there were some significant plot point to this, then it might be forgivable (but more on that later).0:15:20 Inattentively, with careless speed and ease, Lara solves the puzzle. That is just so lame. And in seven years, nobody else thought (or was tempted) to just rotate a couple of the discs and thereby solve it and get the key?0:15:53 "But he didn't leave a letter." This is an example of unbelievably stupid dialog. We can't all be Robert Langdon. But surely when you hear the words "the first letter", you're going to think of a letter of the alphabetic kind before the missive kind?0:16:00 In response to somebody claiming to be Lara Croft, the receptionist would not have looked awestruck. He'd have simply said, "Thank you, Madam: may I see some identification?". Similarly, on Lara trying to leave the building while in breach of contract, the two executors would have tried much, much harder to call her back; and would certainly have called security if necessary.0:16:15 It's nice to see Croft Manor as it appears in the Tomb Raider II game.0:18:48 The battery is still charged after seven years? Well, possibly.0:18:54 "If you're watching/reading this, then [...]". One of the dumbest and most redundant things it's possible to say. Therefore completely at home in this script's dialog. Should be, "The fact that you're watching/reading this means [...]"0:19:42 "Just burn all of it". This is another super-lame moment. Her Dad seems to genuinely, with 100% certainty, expect that Lara will burn all of the Himiko research (more on that point later on) just because she's asked to. Whereas we the audience have zero expectation of that happening. So the disparity is just embarrassing in its naivete. I mean, couldn't they engineer something where he has less certainty, or we have more, so that we could at least be left guessing; with a tiny bit of suspense? But this is just so limp and lame, it's dreadful.0:22:00 This pawn shop scene is the only conceivable explanation for why the plot has Lara delaying signing the paperwork. That is, to keep her poor so that she has to pawn the pendant. But I just don't see any value in it: either for the purpose of advancing plot or developing character. It's possible that the pendant, and this conceit, are designed simply to give Nick Frost a role in the movie. I love Nick Frost, and I think he's excellent. But you can't do this kind of thing within the world of a movie just to give a friend a job in the real one.Another issue is Lara pawning the pendant in the first place, since "it means we'll always be together". If it has that much sentimental value, then it's not believable that she'd risk it being sold while she was away. And if it isn't important, then she wouldn't buy it back when she returned. Anyway, from what we've already seen of her regard for law/order/authority, I find it infinitely more likely that she'd just steal whatever funds she needs.0:25:15 So far Lara has been presented as at least somewhat streetwise. But even the greenest traveler would surely be suspicious on being approached by three young men, and very likely have nothing to do with them. But, no, Lara engages with them and then turns her back on all three, with her pack slung carelessly over one shoulder (the shoulder that's offered to them). It's just so dumb; and expecting us to believe it is annoying.0:30:30 "It'll be an adventure". Another wow moment as the dialog scrapes the bottom of the deepest imaginable barrel. That's seriously the case she makes? Not "Screw the danger, this is our chance to get our fathers back; or at least get closure and maybe revenge on whatever happened to them!" But no. It'll be an adventure. This is an adventure movie, so why not just be completely literal in the script rather than be any kind of creative or realistic? The rest of the dialog in this scene is all over the place, with no shape to it, and no clear motivators.0:33:10 Another tell-don’t show anti-pattern as Trinity and their goals are conjured into existence via dry spoken second-hand exposition. Again, lame, cliched, unconvincing, and eye-rolling stuff, but still unexpectedly charming despite that.0:33:30 This is a really lame scene, dialog-wise; not sure whether it’s supposed to hint at romance, unwanted advances, or what. And warning about dangerous waters at a time when the sea is as calm as a lake is particularly unconvincing. At least have some wind or waves begin to build to make us believe what’s about to happen.0:40:15 The dialog in this scene is also uneven, unshaped, amateurish, vague, and doesn’t know what tone it’s going for (creepy, menacing, insane?). The only person he speaks to is on the other end of that phone? What about the hundreds of people outside the tent? Yes, there’s a callback to that remark at the end of the movie, but a remark has to stand and make sense on its own before you can reveal a second meaning. Also, if he was this incompetent for seven years, they’d have long since fired him and sent a replacement.0:53:42 This is a good bit. Lara has just survived the bomber’s wing, and as she drops inside the fuselage, the soundtrack drops from big and dramatic down to near silence. I said to myself at this point that any self-respecting weaver of suspense would get plenty more mileage out of this plane; and I hoped they would. I hoped the soundtrack was a misdirection. Sure enough, the movie doesn’t waste the plane’s fuselage in that regard (even if it is a bit literal with the idea of a cliffhanger), and as a nice touch it even gives us a knowing “Really?” from Lara. The bit with grabbing the parachute at the last second is good, also.0:58:22 This fight is another good bit. A good fight has to feel like the protagonist is desperate, and is hanging onto survival, and success, with their fingernails. And this one’s like that. It also features what we take to be Lara’s first experience of killing a person. She soon has the bodies falling thick and fast.1:01:30 The problem here is not that he’s gone crazy. I’d be prepared to believe that (after seven years marooned and in mortal peril) he’s gone so irredeemably insane that his hallucinations have become profound, real, and overwhelming enough that climbing a cliff in a desperate effort to escape them seems appropriate. But in that case, he’d be Ben-Gunn-crazy (Treasure Island) for the remainder of the movie. What I’m not prepared to believe is that he’s that insane for just this one scene, and then he’s perfectly normal after that.Oh, and the two-finger kiss gesture thing that’s meant to persuade Dad that Lara’s real is completely and utterly misconceived. The situation for that is not when there’s any doubt that the object is real. You know the object is real; you just don’t know whether it’s a shape-shifter or not. A shape-shifter wouldn’t know what the real person would know. That’s when this kind of thing works. It doesn’t work when you think you might be hallucinating. The hallucination would be generated by your mind, so obviously the hallucination would know everything you know. Sheesh. And yet, in this movie, they expect it to work. It doesn’t.1:08:00 Here again, he has no doubt that Lara burned all of the Himiko research. He doesn’t even need to ask; it’s obvious that she did. So it’s barely comprehensible to him when she admits that she didn’t. I guess it’s an interesting bit of irony that she’s now brought the very thing to the island that the baddies need.1:09:56 I think he’d maybe try doing a bit more to prevent her running off and getting herself killed (as he believes will happen) than standing up and saying “Lara!”.1:18:00 That was a pretty thin wall. I can’t imagine what it could have been made of that the explosives they had (and used) wouldn’t have made short work of it.And, now that everything’s been set up, the movie just rolls on to the end with a little more exposition and a lot of action. Nothing else worth mentioning.

Great Standalone film, not a masterpiece
I'll be honest, I haven't watched any of the Angelina Jolie versions of the movies, and even if I did, I don't see much point in comparing the two. Personally, I think Vikander did a great job, her performance (in my opinion) carried the film, her action shots were amazing, and it felt real, not like she was trying to look pristine and pretty when she should be groaning in pain from realistic harsh falls. The overall look of the film was nice to look at and I really liked the editing. I do have some doubts about the writing and plot points as I feel they could've done without a lot of things, while at the same time should've at least referenced some key elements to things characters, especially where the game (which I have watched and enjoyed) is concerned. It's too bad I didn't grow more attached to the father, it seems the emotional height of the film fell flat because of that lack of connection.

Supporting actors...Alicia Vikander?
What is the matter with Prime Video? You could hire a 19 year old intern who could tell you the leading actress in this film is Alicia Vikander. And her performance made this film worth watching for me!

The ending, got me hyped!
So, the ending couldn't have been better! The story was really good. There were some beats I thought were missed where it got just a little boring but only a smidge, not enough for me to subtract a star. Laura was a strong female role without being outlandishly so. My meaning, if a lady who is 130 lbs goes up against a man with similar training who is 180 lbs, there is going to be a struggle on the lighter fighter. This is shown throughout the film. Her tenacity and grit gives her an advantage over stronger opponents. This is believable and I router for her, believably, the whole way. She is shown as vulnerable but resilient. She loves her father but can survive without him or his wealth. However, with the right resources, she becomes a force to be reckoned with by the bad guys. IMHO as a male, this make her an excellent heroine. She is believable, strong, smart, resourceful, confident, never gives up, and someone my daughter could look up to!

Movies are Movies
The 'Art of Production' just gets better and better, with time. The resolution, the graphics, all of the production, it is an Art, no doubt and a Craft, that over time, the Industry keeps getting better and better..However, years of serving as a Money Laundering front and the 'Real Reason' for the Drug Problem in South and Latin America, has taken it's toll on America and the World, without question. LIke the 'Lady of the Lake', the Lady of the Disease, I find, that with time, all whom she touches, becomes sickened and dies.......But, great movie... Vikander is a hot little number, like one of those British Sports cars, from way back when.... Great for the weekends, with the top down, and the open road....... Well, that is how they are 'selling her', more so in other movies, than this one.... However, keep in mind, she is the ONLY person, who is in this Movie, you have ever even heard of, which is why I added that bit..... Because, she is the only reason, anyone even saw this movie or wanted to see it.... Well that and the countless reproductions over the years......Not sure on the Stars? I put 4, because I did not want to sound negative... However, it is what it is..... You spent $14 for Movie ticket, to profit an Industry, that has sickened the entire World. Either that or you spent Money for a Distribution after this Movie was released, which again.... same story.... That or a Prime Membership, which all in all, nets the Industry just as much, as they need do nothing, to make this Available and they get proceeds, from every view........Love yourself.......... That is the tag line....

guter Auftakt

Da geht noch was
