Not a bad book, just incomplete
I had numerous problems with this book, but my main complaint would be the pacing and the proportion of the book that was spent on the arduous fleeing and emigration process the Lleshis endured. While it should not be slighted, I felt the book did not do justice to the potential for shedding light on the problems of misunderstanding between cultures that exist in this country. There are so many families like the Lleshis that receive unfair prejudice and judgment because of where they come from without any recognition of who they actually are as people. The book had the opportunity to delve into this area with some depth but it seems as if Patterson had reached her page limit and hurriedly finished the book without truly resolving the conflict that had arisen due to 9/11. After the detailed and lengthy description of the family's ordeals of getting to America, their experience here is given short shrift. I expected more from an author of such ability and insight.

The Day of the Pelican
Oh my! What an awesome depiction of love.I originally purchased this book to support a friend of mine, Mark Orfilla, Kosavar Missionary. He was consulted by the author in the writing of this book. What a great blessing I received from supporting him. This book far exceeded my expectations. I've shared it with a friend and plan to do so with others in the future. My son, being homeschooled, and I decided that this would be one of his 'book report' assignments. What a great idea that was. He enjoyed it just as much as I did, I think.I highly recommend anyone read this.

Worth the read.
Short and sweet. I actually found myself wishing the book had been longer and had a lot more detail in it. But it was a good, easy read that made you think about a lot of things. Especially in this current day and age and the current events taking place.

A wonderful addition to any middle school classroom
The author of Bridge to Terabithia provides a wonderful addition to any middle school classroom with The Day of the Pelican. This historical fiction novel tells the story of a girl and her family and their struggle to survive the turbulent conflict between the Serbs and Kosovars in the 1990's. Paterson accurately portrays many of the events of the Serbian/Kosovo War in a voice that young readers will find captivating. The author was inspired by the stories of a refugee family her church sponsored. This example could lead young writers to explore the journeys of immigrants in their own communities.

Not so bad
I read this book for summer reading. It started out slow but I soon became interested in it. Even thought it is fiction it was as real I you could get. Overall not a bad book.
