Yes, you need it!
I took this test today, and I for sure passed the multiple choice section! This book is amazing and formatted just like the exam! A year ago, I was looking for study material for this test and I saw something online about NavaEd. A friend of mine kept failing the 5-9, and I told her about seeing good reviews for this company. She bought the book and passed. Two other teachers also bought the ELA 5-9 book and passed. So, I bought both the Professional Exam and ELA 6-9 and passed both - first try.Tips:I studied with the NavaED professional exam book first and took that test. There is a lot of good information that transfers over to the English exam (a.k.a. good teaching strategies). You can YouTube Dr. Jaspers Essay tips, but I’m not sure if they worked yet. Also, you should look up test taking strategies for the FTCE. It really, really helps.Likes: quick read, comprehensive practice tests with explanations, similar style to test questions, covers competencies.Dislikes: If I had to complain, it would be that I needed to look up detailed information because it wasn’t in the book. The book gives good descriptions, but you will need to delve into the details.

Best resource available!
I took the test today and I passed the multiple-choice section. The Youtube video on writing the essay had some really great writing strategies, and I feel confident that I passed that section as well.At first, I was skeptical when I got this book in the mail because it's smaller than expected. There were quite a few grammatical errors and mistakes (including some of the text being cut off abruptly) but all of the content was informative, and most importantly, on the actual test. The two practice tests in the back are invaluable! I'd say 10-15 questions showed up on the test I took today. If you're worried about not having a solid background in English Literature or teaching, don't worry. This test was a breeze and I majored in something completely unrelated. Good luck!

This is the BEST guide. NavaEd is the ONLY study guide you’ll need.
Oh, MYLANTA! Do NOT waste your money on other study guides. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING you need to know is in THIS STUDY GUIDE! Dr. Jasper did an amazing job. I read this all the way through, took the practice tests in the back of the book, and did it all again. I spent hundreds of $ on other study guides, Study.com, XAMOnline, Mometrix, and NONE of these were as helpful as NavaEd. I took the exam today and passed, all because of this book. Trust me when I say this will help you pass! The redundant material from the other guides did NOT help me, but THIS study guide is the reason I passed the exam.*I also watched Dr. Jasper/NavaEd videos on YouTube. Those were extremely helpful.

This will help you PASS!
This book helped me pass both the written and essay portions of the exam on the first attempt. I used a few other resources but as others have mentioned, this is the resource where you need to spend your time and hard earned money. The practice tests included in this book are the closest thing to the actual test that I could find. Also, the practice questions released by the state as part of their resources are very similar and sometimes word for word.Overall, I would give this book a 4.5 just because there were a few errors in the book but I truly do believe that this book helped me pass so it is well worth the money spent.Good luck and best wishes to those of you that are preparing to take the exam. Study hard, be prepared, and be confident. You can do it!

Poorly Written Book - But It Has Exact Test Questions
This book does not feel like it was written by an English teacher. There are dozens of errors in book structure where whole sentences are cut off. There are also grammatical mistakes and answers to some questions that are incorrect. I would have given this 3 stars, but when I took my test today, about 40 of the 85 multiple choice questions from this book were exact questions that appeared on my exam. Just be ready to make up a load of garbage on the written portion of the exam.

Exactly same questions that are on the FTCE
I had spent about $200 on study guides from study.com and examedge, and nearly 3 months of studying each day to prepare for the exam, only to find out nothing I studied was on the exam, I had completely wasted my money and 3 months of my life. Needless to say I was very disappointed and discouraged.I had read some good reviews about NavaEd and decided to give the exam one more shot. I spent 3 months studying again, and to be honest with this study guide I only really needed a couple of weeks.Much to my surprise and relief, nearly everything in the study guide was on the exam and the practice exam questions in the study guide were identical to what was on the FTCE exam. I would conservatively estimate that more than 80 percent of the exam were the exact same questions I found in the practice test.I passed the exam on the first attempt after using this study guide. I highly recommend it. It's all you need. The only bad thing is it doesn't really prepare you for the essay portion, and I am waiting to hear from that. There are YouTube videos they offer, but I wasn't impressed with the videos. They contradict each other and had some grammatical errors. Also be careful with some of the questions on the practice tests, they have the wrong answers for a couple of them.Overall, I couldn't be happier, I just purchased their book for the FTCE general knowledge exam and I'm looking forward to taking it in a few months.

I passed on the first attempt!
This book was my number one study source. I also used study.com and quizlet. However, I really think this book would have been enough. There are 2 practice tests included. Makes sure you know them inside and out and you will do well. I didn't know what to expect, so I over-studied. Honestly, if I had just stuck to just this book I would have been fine. This book gives a list of literature. I took the time to write summaries of each story. This was not necessary. I really only needed the time periods. I think there were 3 questions that required the tester to know the plot in order to answer the question. So thankful for this resource!
