Get the Gringo [Blu-ray]

Mel, The Kid, The Girl shine.
One of my faves with the Mel, there is nothing about El Pueblito in the movie that did not exist before the do-gooders shut it down and broke up the families. Throw in Peter Stormare as the bad guy and you have a fun ride. Well written.

A Solid Return to form for Gibson
Nothing good comes to mind when you hear the words "Straight to Video." The first image that comes to my mind are those cheap knock-off movies that used to fill the local Blockbuster's shelf in the '90s starring low-end TV actors or washed up stars desperate for title roles. So, when I saw that Mel Gibson's 2012 action film "Get the Gringo" was going straight to DVD/Blu-ray I immediately expected the worst... but, much to my surprise, when I finally sat down with the film I discovered a solidly entertaining action romp. I'd go far as to say that "Get the Gringo" is the most entertaining film from writer/star Mel Gibson since his *ahem* incident.Get the Gringo is directed with a good amount of style by Adrian Grunberg (who previously worked with Gibson as the Assistant Director on Apocalypto) and stars Mel Gibson as "Driver," a wisecracking, inner-monologuing criminal who winds up in a Mexican prison following a botched job. The prison isn't anything like what we have here in the states, seeming more like a ghetto mixed with a flea market that a correctional facility (having not researched this topic, I'll take it on the filmmaker's word when they said they were inspired by a few actual prisons in Mexico) There, he In the prison he befriends a young boy who is kept as the local crime boss's replacement kidney (you see, he's already gone through several kidneys, including the boy's father). This is the set up for a madcap action thriller with Driver trying to get back his money and protect the boy and his mother from the crime boss.As you probably could gather, Get the Gringo doesn't feature Braveheart quality writing, but, for what it is, "Get the Gringo" is a solid action-thriller that reminds us why we used to love seeing Mel Gibson on the movie screen. He plays Driver with that same cocksure charisma and energy that made him one of the greatest action stars of the '80s-'90s. Very few actors pull of this kind of hero as well as Gibson and it really iUnfortunately for "Get the Gringo", Gibson let alcohol get the better of him prior to Get the Gringo's intended release, which resulted in another leaked tape and 20th Century Fox choosing to release the film straight to DVD/Blu-Ray. It's a shame, because "Get the Gringo" is a much better return to form for Gibson as an action star than 2010's Edge of Darkness. If you're a fan of classic Gibson action roles (and can separate the actor's work from his tumultuous personal life) you'll probably have a lot of fun with Get the Gringo. It isn't a great action film, but it does have a remarkably entertaining performance from Gibson, and a handful of solid, stylish action sequences certain to entertain fans of the genre.

You're supposed to be reviewing the movie not the man
This was a much better movie than Edge of Darkness as the world weariness that marks the life of Mel Gibson and which is written on his face fits perfectly with the character he's playing in the movie. Both guys are damaged goods and in many ways he's playing himself in this movie. The movie itself is really only a four star movie in that it shows us or most of us at least a world we didn't know existed and has an interesting storyline with many different dynamics to it. Devoid of star power in the main, the movie does benefit from good casting with many character actors that you've seen in myriad other movies doing what they do best namely playing interesting characters. The little boy and his mum are particularly good and it's nice to see a real woman in a role instead of a sculpted faced B. Hills actress in the role. The action sequences are well done and the look of the film is interesting. It looks like they shot some of it on high def video which once again gives some elements a visually harder more real edge to them. The music is also particularly good and was obviously chosen by someone with a sense of humour.I gave it one more star than it deserved to counterbalance the poor reviews that were more a critique of the man and his a__hole qualities than it was about the movie. That seems unfair to me as then all the other people who contribute to a movie both in front of and behind the camera are not getting the recognition they deserve.

Great movie
Great production values, facinating movie. Gibson is as usual a fine actor. Story line is very interesting and seeing how a Mexican prison works is intriguing. I loved this movie.

The Mel Gibson vehicle we've all been waiting for!
With Mel Gibson doing himself no favors in the public media over the last six years, GET THE GRINGO is a much-needed reminder of why we loved him so much. While it was greatly refreshing to see Gibson on screen again in EDGE OF DARKNESS and THE BEAVER after an over- bearing eight-year absence, GET THE GRINGO does the best of capturing everything we truly loved about Gibson's performances: charm, wit, humor, edge. The script by Gibson, director Adrian Grunberg and producer Stacey Persky is an original and tight balance of humor, edge, and danger that can very easily be considered an unofficial sequel to the theatrical cut of Gibson's cult favorite, PAYBACK. While the character of GRINGO's Driver never reveals his actual name, he possesses a lot of the same qualities as PAYBACK's Porter, including a U.S. military tattoo, a chain-smoking habit, sticky fingers, an iron jaw, and a penchant for bloodshed. Grunberg's direction is also solid with an obvious love for Sam Peckinpah paraded throughout. For those of us who endured so many years of understandable negativity towards Gibson for his personal troubles, GET THE GRINGO is the film we've long awaited. It's truly a shame this film won't be seen wide in the U.S. It would've been a better comeback vehicle than EDGE OF DARKNESS was meant to be. GET THE GRINGO practically screams, "Remember me? I'm still here, and I still got it!"But if one thing is certain, it is that in the age of home entertainment, every good film gets discovered by an audience. Sooner or later...

Blew Me Away...Good
Although I had never heard of this movie I ordered it as a kind of a flip of the bird at the film industry for blackballing a great actor as a political and religious witch burning I was pleasantly surprised at how good the movie was. The characters were witty and fresh and well portrayed with a plot that just keeps giving and giving. A great movie. A sleeper. Who cares if you like Gibson or not he is a good actor and his talents shine brightly here.
