They appear to be made of solid lightweight plastic, not metal, although they give the appearance of being made of metal from a short distance away. The light weight makes it less likely that they will fall off due to gravitational pull. It is probably a good thing that when pulled off they will come off harmlessly rather than tearing skin! Because of the small size these clips are not recommended for children under 3 years old. For example, it would not be good to use them for tongue rings, although a child may think that the idea is appealing and end up getting one in a lung requiring a trip to the ER!
