An Excellent Commentary!
Excellent commentary! It is not technically written for the general reader. However, and while concise, it is insightful and informative and convicting with practical applications for today. It follows the NIV. Each section discussed in Revelation is looked at in three ways:(1) "Original Meaning" discusses things like Greek word meanings and cultural context.(2) "Bridging Contexts" bridges the ancient world in which Revelation was written to the contemporary world by "focusing on both the timely and timeless aspects of the texts" (p.10).(3) "Contemporary Significance" helps to bring out the various issues faced by the original readers in their past cultural context and helps to bring out the significance and specific applications it may have for us today.NIVAC also discusses the various theological models that have been interpreted in the reading of Revelation, e.g. the "rapture," the "millennium," etc. This is a commentary that provides great help in not only understanding Revelation, especially in it's cultural context, but in offering an approach that helps us to apply it's lessons in our lives today. Keener's commentary challenges us to rethink Revelation's importance for today and not just what it really meant for the audience of Revelation the first 100 years of the Christian Church, but forces us to reevaluate what Christianity means for us today and to reexamine our lives as Christians in light of that meaning.NIVAC on Revelation by Craig S. Keener is a must read not only for those seeking an introduction into the book but also for those seeking its meaning and relevance for today for their Christian life.

Excellent for pastors and teachers.
There are plenty of commentaries on Revelation. The scholar has Beale and Aune, the student has got the less detailed but scholarly Mounce, and the layman has the rightly popular Hendriksen. There are a lot of other good commentaries out there, but it is hard to find one that stands out from the crowd. This one by Professor Craig S Keener fills a need in that it is designed to apply the lessons of Revelation to contemporary life. Keener is no academic lightweight, he has already written a 1061 page commentary on Matthew, but he is no stodgy academic either, he is also actively involved in contemporary church life.In the commentary he covers short sections of Revelation by first discussing the original meaning of the text, which he does reasonably well. Although I think more care is needed to bring out the meaning of the symbolism of Revelation. The layout could also be improved to make clearer which verse he is talking about. After the section on the original meaning there is a section which builds a bridge between the world of the bible and the world of today. Finally there is a longer section which applies the passage to contemporary western life. The pastor or teacher who has to teach Revelation will find this commentary very useful and it will help to answer the question. "Well what has all that Roman persecution got to do with us?" Craig Keener knows the Western church well enough to be suitably challenging in his application. He will also help to enlarge the horizon of an inward looking church. Because he applies Revelation to contemporary life a new edition will be required five to ten years hence. The 576 page commentary is sufficiently detailed to answer the main questions posed by the text but it is not over detailed. The busy pastor will still need to supply some more analysis. The book has quite extensive footnotes, which can usually be ignored, and four indexes. Pastors and teachers will benefit from this book as well as students who want more than just an academic interest in Revelation. Good job Craig, look forward to the next edition.

Best I've Read
There is so much stuff out there doing a lot of predicting, but this one concentrates more on discovering what the original hearers would have understood, then brings those ideas into contemporary meaning for today.I do think there is a larger meaning than just what the original hearers understood - especially in Revelation, but this book is a great place to start. Don't start with the hype of current novel series and all the mystery surrounding end time events. Just like the unknown of the Kennedy assassination, I think most of us are drawn to things that "reveal the unknown."It can't be ignored, however, that prophesy in the Old Testament does have a telescoping perspective. That means it had a specific meaning for the hearers at the time, but also had an extended longer term meaning - such as some of the Messianic prophesies in Isaiah.I think anyone who is serious about learning what Revelation says, should own this volume and read it carefully.

Excellent
This commentary may not have been technically written for the layperson, however, as a layperson, I found this to be an excellent resource for contemporary living. The author pull-no-punches when he discusses the church in America. I like that he sees some of the things in the American church that I also see. The "Bridging Contexts" and"Contemporary Significance" are especially valuable. I recommend this book to any layperson who desires an understanding of how Revelation pertains to society and churches today.

For a Student of God’s Word!
Dr. Craig Kaiser is an excellent theologian! I used this commentary while exploring the book of Revelation with a women’s Bible Study. Dr Kaiser’s share history of interpretation, possible interpretation, application and his own thoughts. The commentary, like others is divided by chapters of the book of revelation.Dr. Kaiser certainly helped to unveil much of the secrecy of the symbolism in the book of Revelation.
