The Mystery of Faith: An Introduction to Catholicism

simplistic but complex
Himes does a great job at putting some complicated religious terms in ways that anyone can read and understand. Anyone, whether they are christian or not can read this book and have a basic understanding of what Grace is or what Sin is etc. to a catholic. Each chapter is labeled with a single word and that is the topic that is going to be delved into in great detail for the next 10-15 pages. He uses down-to-earth language so nothing seems difficult or complex but you come away with a great knowledge of what it means to have faith. It's a wonderful book to introduce someone to writings of faith becuase it gives a backround for all the topics central to catholicism

Great resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith
Not the easiest faith ebook to follow. The author takes the listener through several points of faith to ponder, sometimes losing the listener in the complexity of the message he tries to convey. However, after thoughtful reflection, one comes to the realization of the author's message. I recommend it for those seeking a new paradign, a deeper understanding of their Catholic faith journey or presenting their Catholic faith to others in a new light. A great reading/listening once one gets over the "What is he trying to say?" hump, it all becomes so clear.

Accessible and enriching
Clear, precise, practical, engaging, reflective, common sense language, accessible any level of learning and a refreshing approach to a rich historical and spiritual tradition. Granted written for those who are considering joining the Catholic community, it is worth reading for any Christian to make sense of profound concepts in a approachable manner. The chapter concluding reflective questions provide a pause to savor and consider the previous chapter alone or in conversation.

I wasn't sure how such a small book could yield such monumental information. Father Himes exceeded my expectations.

claiming things like the priest in reconciliation is primarily there to represent ...
Very unhappy with this. Theologically it's completely off the rails, claiming things like the priest in reconciliation is primarily there to represent the community instead of as God's representative. From the Vatican site: "Just as he does at the altar where he celebrates the Eucharist and at each one of the sacraments the priest, as the minister of penance, works "in persona Christi"." Further he seems to think that reconciliation doesn't wipe away past sins, in defiance of two thousand years of Church teaching. This isn't Catholic, it's a weird melange of atheism, Catholic approximations, and pure unrefined 1970s. Avoid.

It's okay
I found this a tough read and it didn't really have any information that inspired me too much.I wouldn`t necessarily recommend it to someone having a crisis of faith.
