Q: Will a rat be able to chew through the soft metal cage ?

not before it dies - keep checking trap every 10 hours manx if you want rat alive...thel do get lively and the mechanism in the trap is quite delicate and mine needed repairing with each catch. Also caught a squirrel that couldn't eat through wire but was pretty pissed off by the time I released it ! Suggest you practice opening trap door mechanism before real catch as I found attaching some stiff wire helped get the door open without getting your fingers near to mesh and teeth!

Yes, you can. I left mine unset for a while, so the rats saw birds going in and out and it looked safe to them. Eventually they came closer and I allowed them to walk in and eat there without setting the trap. Then when they got used to going in all the time, I set it and caught 4

I think the size of this trap would be ok for mink.

I very much doubt it - it looks a tricky little widget to improvise, and China is a long way off, in more ways than just geographically, for fiddly little spare parts. I am only answering this to sympathise, because I caught a hedgehog too. Unfortunately, the rats seem utterly uninterested, for whom it was bought.
