Haydn, Rossini & Mozart [DVD]

Most other reviewers were listening to something else
This is a video of Peter Maag conducting Haydn Drumroll, a Rossini overture, and Mozart piano concerto 20 with Maria Tipo. It also contains an audio only performance of Haydn 104 and a very nice performance of 99 that is not listed and can only be accessed by fast forwarding through 104--indeed all the performances are in my view very good and a welcome addition to my Peter Maag collection. Most of the other reviewers are talking about totally different DVDs, however, so are useless as reviews for this one. Since these reviewers seem to know music and do not seem overtly crazy, this is surely an Amazon mistake that they are attached to this DVD

Fine Mozart, good Haydn
The Mozart Concerto is the best thing here, a beautiful performance by Maria Tipo with excellent support from Maag and the orchestra. Peter Maag was a splendid Swiss conductor (1919-2001) who left us great recordings of the Mendelssohn "Scottish" and Mozart "Prague" Symphonies (originally on London LPs) and many other fine things, but I find his leadership a bit lackluster here. The orchestra plays flawlessly, but performances are missing a certain spark. To damn the disc with faint praise, I would describe these Haydn performances as "adequate." The Rossini, not one of his more famous overtures, is well done.

Good acquisition!
Three of my favourite classic composers. Great interpretation.
