Few books hold a candle to it with in the fantasy genre, but then again, it requires the reader to put more than his thinking cap on to understand it. If you are not as learned as the author-an award winning PhD scholar, then have google or a good old fashioned dictionary or encyclopedia handy, because you're going to need it. On the other hand, some of the meso-american inspiration is so completely in-universe, that you just have to pick up the speech via inference. In either way the language, and ambiance alone is enough to draw you in. Better still the chapters are well planned, so its a perfect book to read while waiting in line for a coffee at a crowded coffee bar, book in one hand, smart phone in the other (to look stuff up). If anything it is just mind blowing how much more educated fantasy authors were 40 years ago, compared to the fanfic hacks of our present age. Of course now that I've said that, I'm sure the hatred will fly. So be it. I love this book.

I have love this author and the RPG that he developed. This is a well written book that gives tremendous insight into an incredibly complex society developed by the author. If anything I would love to see the other books written about this world made available for kindle as well. (Strong Hint)If anyone is not familiar with EPT it is a contemporary of the original D&D and has a wonderful intricate back story.This story is really entertaining and hard to put down after you begin.

M.A.R. Barker is sometimes referred as the american Tolkien or the forgotten Tolkien. The world he created with it's mixture of Mayan and Indian/Pakistani cultures is very unusual for a fantasy novel. This is very refreshing. The typical setting tropes one finds in fantasy novels can be so cookie cutter that many fantasy stories could very easily take place in another's setting. Barker, on the other hand, delivers an alternate setting so far removed from any other fantasy setting and deeply immerses the reader into his creation. Language, culture, races, high-level intrigue, and religion are all present and not what one would expect.

I played EPT 40 years ago, and this book brought it all back like it was yesterday. It's a complex story set in a meticulously constructed world. More MAR Marker on Kindle please!

World building is a five. Story is a two. I played a lot of Empire of the Petal Throne in the '70s so I rounded up to four.

The story and characters drew me in. I wanted to know more. There were more than a few times when I had to force myself to put the book down so I could get something done around the house or even to go to bed.

The prose isn't always the easiest, but for sheer inventiveness, for fantasy that is worlds away from the usual LOTR/GoT retreads, this really delivers

Not as good as Flamesong, but great for those who want a vision of Tekumel (an RPG game world). Nice, if plodding, story. The author recently passed and those of us who love his works will miss him. I read this every few years and hope it will make its way to Kindle.

This is a gripping story set on an alien world, in fact so far in the future is it that the technology is like magic and as such it is a fantasy tale. The text can be hard to read at times as it uses lots of fancy made up words..think Tolkien Elvish but instead based on asian dialects rather than European. After I got past the first few pages I found it gripping, a real page turner and a fascinating world. The ending is satisfactory but was a bit abruptly handeled. Over all its a must read for fantasy fans.

Great story set in a fabulously imagined world. Anticipating release of further titles in this series which have been out of print or unavailable for too long !

Es ist wirklich traurig, dass einen häufig selbst langjährige Rollenspieler und Fantasy-Fans mit großen Augen fragend ansehen, wenn man ihnen gegenüber den 2012 verstorbenen Professor Muhammad Abd-Al-Rahman Barker (kurz: M.A.R. Barker) und sein Rollenspiel „Empire Of The Petal Throne“ erwähnt.Dabei könnte man mit guten Argumenten sagen: M.A.R. Barker (mitunter als der „amerikanische Tolkien“ oder vielleicht treffender als „der vergessene Tolkien“ bezeichnet) hat zur Entwicklung der Rollenspiele einen Beitrag geleistet, welcher auch heute noch nicht abgeschätzt werden kann. Man führe sich bitte vor Augen, dass M.A.R. Barker bereits 1975 (!), als auch „Dungeons & Dragons“ noch in den Kindeschuhen steckte, mit „Empire Of The Petal Throne“ ein Fantasy Rollenspiel schuf, welches sich aufgrund seines anspruchsvollen Settings komplett von D & D und seinen Nachahmern unterschied (und welches auch ursprünglich bei TSR erschien).„Empire Of The Petal Throne“ war auf der von M.A.R. Barker erdachten Welt Tekumel angesiedelt, welche, damals wie heute ungewöhnlich, nicht so sehr von Heroic Fantasy, JRR Tolkien und den europäischen Mythen beeinflusst war – sondern sehr komplex erdachte und akribisch detaillierte Kulturen bot, welche eher von denen der Azteken, der Maya und auch dem alten Indien inspiriert waren. Tekumel war darüber hinaus auch in einer Art präsentiert, welche eben nicht Dungeon Hacks zum zentralen Thema hatte, sondern sehr viel Gewicht auch kulturelle, religiöse und linguistische Aspekte legte. Im Klartext: Tekumel ist ein Setting, welches auch heutzutage „ungewöhnlich“ und auffallend detailliert erscheinen würde – Mitte der 70er war es etwas komplett Exotisches.Das typische Markenzeichen von M.A.R. Barker war eben die akribische Ausarbeitung von Kulturen – und da der Mann als Professor für Urdu und Südasienwissenschaften ein sehr versierter Linguist war legte er gerade auch sprachliche Aspekte großen Wert.Nach dieser Einleitung sollte klar sein: THE MAN OF GOLD, einer der von M.A.R. Barker verfassten auf seiner Welt Tekumel spielenden Romane, ist nicht unbedingt leichte Triviallektüre für den Strand – hier ist man mit der gerade auf dem Fantasy-Sektor erhältlichen Dutzendware (natürlich) besser beraten. Wer also Fantasy möglichst austauschbar mit „edlen spitzohrigen Elfen, grundehrlichen bärtigen Zwergen und fiesen Orks“ mag wird hiermit nie und nimmer glücklich… THE MAN OF GOLD ist sehr eigen.Hinzu kommt: man merkt diesem Buch an, dass es von einem sehr mit dem präsentierten Hintergrund vertrauten, sehr gebildeten Autor verfasst wurde, und keinesfalls „einfach mal runtergeschrieben“ ist – was auch bedingt, dass dieser Roman vom Leser hohe Aufmerksamkeit verlangt. Aber, wenn man sich auf all dies einlässt stellt man fest: THE MAN OF GOLD ist einfach faszinierend und spannend. Man erlebt eine sehr originelle Geschichte mit Protagonisten, die einem anfangs genauso fremd wie die gesamte Welt Tekumel erscheinen mögen, die aber einfach sehr schlüssig und durchdacht erarbeitet wurden.Für mich als Fazit: THE MAN OF GOLD ist typisch Tekumel und M.A.R. Barker – sicherlich auf Anhieb nicht leicht zugänglich, aber einfach faszinierend. Ein Buch, das im Gedächtnis bleibt.
