Chike and the River

Excellent book
This is a story of an eleven year old Nigerian boy (Chike), who moved from the village of Umuofia to live with an uncle in a big Nigerian city (onitsha). While in onitsha, Chike experienced the urban city life (quite a difference from the village he had left behind), he attended school, made friends, and became fascinated with crossing the river Niger on a ferry boat.Chike did not have the money required to pay for the ferry boat ride, and so, he tried to raise the money in some strange ways, like going to seek the services of a money doubler, washing cars, etc. He was defrauded by the money doubler (chandus the magician), But was able to raise this money through washing cars and his dream of crossing the river Niger was finally fulfilled. This is a childrens book, you will not be bored reading it if you are an adult, it is very explanatory, short, and easy to understand. Achebe takes you into the life and thinking of a little African kid, and what it is like to grow up young in Nigeria, you may find yourself revisiting some of the very funny chapters, excellent book.

To my nephew, Happy Birthday!
Had Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" as required reading in high school and dreaded every lesson; so depressing.Years later, I decided to revisit the author starting "light". Good start. Phew. Will now venture onto "Girls at War" and "There was a country" and give this "Chike and the River" to a young nephew.

NICE LITTLE BOOK FOR KIDS!
A delightful little boy for kids. I bought this book for my 7 year old kid. The setting is at the towns Onitsha and Asaba in Nigeria and the story centers on the many adventures of a boy called Chike. I recommend the book to kids as well as adults who want to know a little of Nigeria of the 1960s. I enjoyed the book as well as my kid did!

Great book!
I thought that it was very cool how there were many unknown words in this book. It made you think about them and imagine what they could mean before you could look it up. This is a great children's book, in my opinion, and I would recommend it to anyone.

I read this book and gave it to my 7 year-old daughter to read. She loved it. I was born and raised in this Onitsha and I have been to Asaba many times. I live in the USA now. I used the book to teach my two little daughters some aspects of Igbo culture.
