SP is a trusted brand
We switched to a regime of this + Standard Process Canine Flex Support from Dasuquin for a 13 year old standard dachshund (who's been to the vet with neck/back issues a time or two) and an 8 year old border collie (who tries to jump high all the time). The dachshund takes the recommended dosage and the bc gets the same dosage as him (as more of a preventative). Dasuquin is probably cheaper, but we are happy with the results and quality of SP. Sticking with SP.

Alternative to surgery (formula change??)
Our vet got us hooked on using this when our Pug's rear knee kept slipping out of its joint. The dog was 8 months to a year old when we started him on it. Now at six years old, he has not had this problem since he was one, and we did not have to operate. We are tempted to use it ourselves....5-29-14: My original review is above. But I have to add this as of today. I just ordered 4 more jars to keep my supply on hand. The new jars are half the weight of the previous jars. Same size, but half the weight. This tells me that the compound is no longer the same. It has been changed. So when we finally get to using these jars, and our 4 boys have been on the new formula for months or years, I will update this again if we notice anything different about their activity level or ability to perform their various circus stunts. It is disturbing when something that works changes, especially when the change is not noted from the manufacturer. We do not know yet if it is an improved formula, or a skimped down formula. I just want other people to be aware. Now if the manufacturer would like to comment on what I just said, I welcome it. Don't keep secrets.

Wish it was less expensive
I have a Doberman about 7 years old. She limps off and on in her don't legs. She was a rescued stray and has always had a limp after too much play (particularly fetch) since I got her as a young dog. Se would have a slight limp for a day or two after a long day at play. As she has aged, the limping got worse after play. She would play with my neighbors dog and cry it a horrible yelp and hold her paw up. It was now on the other side. Went to the vet because sometimes after something like this she couldn't put her leg on the ground. Took many X-rays and Bly one foot showed some arthritis from what looked like a past jumping down injury. That was the foot she had always had problems with. But the vet couldn't find anything wrong with the right side and it was the one causing the most pain. Sent the X-rays to the radiologist and still nothing. So I started researching supplements. I stumbled upon this and I love this brand Standard Process. I already happen to take a lot of these supplements. I bought it and started giving it to my Doberman. Within a week she was acting like a puppy again. We never limped again (and by this time, you could tell she was always in pain, shuffling her feet, etc). I tried to order more from my practitioner and she ended up consulting the vet from Standard Process and he said for my large breed dog he usually uses their supplements for people. So he put her on their Gotu Cola, Ligaplex II, and Bowsellia. It's about $110 for all 3 and it doesn't even last a month. However, she was doing VERY well. Then I ran out......Back to limping and licking her legs where they hurt almost constantly. She also doesn't chew on her chew toys anymore and I figured it up. She starts to chew, and the way she has to grip them with her paws and don't legs, it causes her pain. She chews for maybe 10 seconds and then starts to lick her painful areas. I got her back on the people versions bit don't k ow how I will maintain at that price. The one I purchased here on Amazon didn't last long either because she is an 80 lb dog. I may look for alternatives but will stick with either this one here or keep doing the Ligaplex II and find a less expensive Bowsellia and Gotu Kola. Hard to find the efficacy equivalent though.

Great supplement for your elder canine companions,...
I, myself, use Standard Process supplements. What I like about them is that they are Whole Food products, meaning that whole food supplements are made by concentrating foods for use in supplements. These whole food supplements provide nutrients that work synergistically. They work together to provide you with optimal nutrition for good health.I started using this when Max, my 12 year old pit/lab mix, was diagnosed with arthritis in his hips. I added this and hydrotherapy exercise to his regimen and he is looking and feeling better than most dogs his age. Since this is in powder form, it is easy to put on food. If you're just using dry food and your dog does not lick the bowl clean, try adding the powder to the dry food, place a teaspoon of water in the bowl and mix it all together. Or you can use pumpkin or some other wet food item to add to your dog's meal. I use water because I don't want to add calories to my dog's diet. This supplement is somewhat expensive if you have a medium to large breed dog a bottle will not last quite as long. The dosage is 1 tsp, 2x daily. For smaller dogs, it is much less so a bottle of this will go far.I didn't notice a change in Max for a few weeks after starting the supplement. Also, we were able to help maintain some of the muscle he has lost due to muscle atrophy. When we got him a few years ago, he was 130 lbs and very obese. Now he is 70 lbs and very healthy. Here are the dosing amounts from the website:Servings Per Container90 g: 78 based on 1/2 teaspoon20 g: 65 based on 1/8 teaspoonHere is the description for the use of the product:The canine musculoskeletal system has many components: bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, as well as organs that support these tissues including the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands. The whole food ingredients in Canine Musculoskeletal Support provide a wide range of essential nutrients for these tissues, helping them maintain optimal health and function.
