This book gave me the technical information I needed when I first with diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease. It could have been a little more informative with what type of diet would be helpful. However, that would entail knowing what a person's particular lab tests showed about various electrolyte levels, so all in all it was most helpful.

Where are Reliable Lists of OK Foods in order to Avoid Dialysis ?
Some of the info in this book is presented in a very casual manner..., " do the best you can" and then make your changes gradually. This is appropriate for those with near-normal kidney function. Those with 40% or less of normal kidney function would be wise to address the problem in total and markedly reduce our intake of sodium, potassium, phosphate and protein. What most of us need and do NOT have would be comprehensive food lists that include veggies and grains that we can safely use. Right now shopping and preparing meals is extremely difficult, I spend hours in the market reading content listings. and avoiding those foods that give NO info ( i.e. bakery goods)No mention is made regarding the loss of muscle strength due to our scanty intake of protein. Is the use of essential amino acid tabs advisable?

A great start
When I was looking for information about kidney disease, I found this author. I've been following her blog and website for some time now and am more than satisfied with the books she is publishing. There is a lot of new information to remember about nutrition that is different or additional to what we learn when we are just trying to lose weight or eat healthfully. I have restrictions on foods that are otherwise healthy to eat, so must find ways to eat despite this. This book helps explain all that. She also has a cookbook out, The Kidney Friendly Diet Cookbook, which also shows me how to set my menus in a balanced way. These meals are far from boring. Try this author's books. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Excellent Informational Book
I like the way this book teaches about caloric intake and how to figure how many calories you need daily: whether you need to gain, lose, or stay the same weight. I liked the in depth discussion on macronutrients: carbs, fats and proteins. I especially liked the list of high and low biological proteins. There are excellent ideas on how to feel full without eating more protein. And on p. 55 there is a great visual showing portion sizes.Susie P.
