Q: Does this amp have any balance control? I see it doesn't have a phono input. What's involved to run a turntable without compromising sound quality?

No balance control. You will need a phono stage device for your turntable. Yaqin makes some good tube ones.

Q: What makes this a better choice than the MC13s with EL34's? Do I need a phono stage as well? If so, what does that add?

The difference is in the output tubes. EL34 in Ultra linear configuration will give you output power to 40Watt max. per channel in practice it will result in 32Watt per channel. The 100B uses KT88 that can push more power in Ultra linear mode up to 60Watts per channel. The KT88 output tubes sound a little brighter than the EL34's that sound warmer. In general use the 100B for larger speakers.

Q: does that curved metal grate come with it? can i basically plug my source IN, and Hook up some nice speakers directly out and rock?

YES! The unit comes complete. You have to remove the plate (tool is included with manual) to get at the tubes and plug them in their designated sockets. It is shipped with the tubes in protective sleeves to prevent breakage. Plug the tubes in the sockets as marked, hook up inputs and outputs, give it a few minutes to warm up and rock out brother! Oh, by the way, did you know you should plug the amp into a line conditioner set for 110v? If you don't you may blow a fuse. Get the APC LE Line R 1200VA Automatic Voltage Regulator sold on Amazon for $46. It has a switchable output for 110v that will do the trick.
