Great value for Jensen input transformer pre
There are currently virtually no reviews for this preamp online, so you’re probably as mystified what you’ll get as I was. I’ve only just plugged it in, tried various dynamics, ribbons and mics plus a J bass through the DI. So maybe my opinion will change but for now this is a keeper. What does it sound like? Online discussions so far have thought maybe the original Presonus MP20 (which I owned and sold a decade ago) or the Great River pre (also very popular in that era). I’d guess more the latter than the former from memory. The top end is really detailed and fast here, and the bottom has that transformer vibe, which I’m not sure how to describe effectively in words. It’s a very lively preamp, the impedance knob does have a large effect and maybe around noon is better for condensers and dynamics and max for ribbons. Note that the loudness changes with impedance so you should compensate as louder always sounds better until pain/distortion. The build is excellent and much better than typical ART/Yorkville (you can tell I’m not shilling huh) with detented knobs and a solid chassis. How does it compare to other cheap transformer pres like the Warm WA12 or the GAP 73? The Warm is oddly less warm than the GAP, and the TransX would be closer to the Warm API clone than a Neve sound. But it doesn’t sound API at all, while the Warm is sort of an API facsimile. The biggest remaining question is, is it musical? I think the TransX sounds so good on ribbons (though it can have a little hiss) that it is a keeper just for that. When you want to punch a sound forward in the mix I also think this pre works well. Be sure to check the impedance setting that has a bit more effect here than usual. The sweepable low cut is a great idea and sounds good. The DI is almost too revealing of the instrument and you will want outstanding pickups and strings for your bass. In general, the open sound of the Jensen transformers leaves nowhere to hide...and if you have a lot to show off, that’s all good.
