All 16 episodes from the fifth season of the hard-hitting ITV prison drama set in the women's wing of HMP Larkhall. In Episode 1, the prisoners want revenge on Snowball (Nicole Faraday), who planted the bomb that caused the explosion at the end of the last series. In Episode 2, Snowball retrieves her gun from its hiding place and starts to put her escape plan into action with the reluctant help of Karen (Claire King). Episode 3 sees the arrival on G-Wing of Phyl (Stephanie Beacham) and Bev (Amanda Barrie), aka 'the Costa Cons'. In Episode 4, Shell (Debra Stevenson) threatens to blow the whistle on Fenner (Jack Ellis) and his pimping scheme. It's the last straw for Di (Tracey Wilkinson) in Episode 5, when hubby Neil (James Gaddas) starts bringing his boyfriends back to their marital home. In Episode 6, Colin (Tristan Sturrock) unearths the stash Phyl and Bev have hidden behind their mirror - but his own little habit should keep him from shopping them. Episode 7 sees Christopher Biggins (played by himself) being held hostage by Larkhall inmates during a celebrity visit. In Episode 8, Julie S (Victoria Alcock) is forced to consult the unpleasant Dr Nicholson (Philip McGough) after discovering a lump on her breast, and Episode 9 sees her struggling to come to terms with her cancer treatment. In Episode 10, Snowball is in solitary confinement, and feeling increasingly desperate... In Episode 11, allegations made by Snowball in her suicide note are leaving a lot of people feeling vulnerable and exposed. Episode 12 sees the return to G-Wing of old-timer Noreen Biggs (Maria Charles). In Episode 13, Phyl and Bev take the phrase 'open prison' a bit too literally and head off to a swanky restaurant. In Episode 14, a new inmate, lifer Kris Yates (Jennifer Ness), makes a big impression when she arrives on G-Wing. Episode 15 sees Denny (Alicia Eyo) frustrated by a setback to the planned opening of her art exhibition. Finally, Episode 16 sees Yvonne (Linda Henry) locked in an old cell in the underground prison after her and Kris's escape plan is foiled by Fenner.

The Fifth Series of an Excellent Prison Drama
The only negative thing I have to say about this series is that this is the series when the best Bad Girls character ever, Yvonne Atkins leaves. It isn't the same without Yvonne, though series 7 is my personal favourite (it's great from start to finish. I expect you're probaby confused). This series begins with Fenner going on a men's night out, along with new officer Collin Hedges. It's then when Shell Dockley is found and returned to Larkhall. However she doesn't last long, and it's thanks to Fenner that she doesn't. He's also the reason why we say bye to some other characters; he has Dockley sent to a mental institution, where she loses her new born baby. Karen Betts gets proof of Fenner's unprofessional behavior (you know what he's like with the women), but he steals the evidence away and frames her in dangerous driving. And then there's Atkins. Her escape plan backfires when he locks her in a tunnel, which Atkins finds 2 seconds later is blocked off. The series ends with Yvonne, sitting there crying, scratching at the wall, trying desperately to escape. The series ends with two desperate words from Yvonne herself; "help me".Other character leave in this series also. Barbara Hunt gets released at the end (she's still there when the series ends, but she's gone by series 6. Same with Buki Lester). Denni leaves also and so does Snowball, who hangs herself when she loses the will to live. There's good and interesting events throughout the series. Atkins and Hedges have an affair, but Atkins soon discovers that Colin is a heroin adict and loses respect for him, but the two get back together again. Fenner turns really nasty towards Yvonne, when he plants drugs on her and Julie S discovers she has breast cancer. And Sylvia's husband Bobby commits suicide, but it's not long until Sylvia falls for Henry. This series also introduces some new characters. Hedges I've already mentioned. Then there's Selena Geeson (she arrives near towards the end). Then there's some new inmates such as Kris Yates (she too arrives near towards the end) and the two best characters (after Atkins) Phyl Oswyn and Bev Tull; two alcoholics and drug adicts, very sneaky and manipulative. Not to be trusted, but you can't help liking them. Series 5 is a great series, maybe not as good as 4, but definately great. A series I'd recommend to all Bad Girls fans.

More adventures in Larkhall
In 2003, viewers were treated to series five of 'Bad Girls', a compulsive TV show that really is a cut above the usual prison drama - and what a tasty series the fifth one was. This was the last set of episodes to feature Claire King as officer Karen Betts, and Linda Henry as the volatile prisoner Yvonne Atkins. We were also introduced to my all-time favourite 'Bad Girls', the Costa Cons Phyl and Bev, beautifully portrayed by Stephanie Beacham and Amanda Barrie. The ladies might be grannies, but their sharper and more tricksy than the majority of the other prisoners, and even some of the officers. These best friends will stop at nothing to get their fix of alcohol and drugs, and their adventures would never fail to make me smile. Speaking of comedy, watch out for Christopher Biggins being invited to an event at the prison, only to end up being held hostage by the girls. There's more serious events from the baddie governor Jim Fenner (who appears to be able to get away with just about anything, and does so for another two series), and some sadness when Julie Saunders discovers she has cancer. If I am honest, I still don't think that this was the best of 'Bad Girls', especially when you compare it to the previous ones, but it's still damn good television. I think my personal favourite was number seven, which was an overly outstanding series from beginning to end, though I do appear to in a slight minority with that opinion. The DVD box set itself from 2 Entertain Video looks wonderful, with good menus, and a few little extras including outtakes, and a gallery of mug shots of all the major characters.

Great Show!
This series has so many good things about it. Good story lines that focus on Neil Grayling and Di Barker's relationship. Snowball's suicide. Bodybag's husband's suicide. All greatly acted from all actors involved. The only negative part for me was having Shell Dockley back for a few episodes. I found that a desperate move. Debra Stephensen is a brilliant actress and the character could of gone on to do more great storylines. Top Dog Yvonne Atkins dies here in this series. Another sad story. Two good new characters - Selena and Kris come which is a similar love story like Nikki and Helen. But Kris and Selena are great characters as well.

Loving Bad Girls
So Series 5 is like one of the best. As Dockley returns to G-wing after being caught in Amsterdam by Fenner and the other lads and is now preggers but Fenner makes it out she ill treating her baby and has it taken away. The drama just keeps on rolling out. Nearly completed this series and will be starting series 6 straight after it. So glad these dvds are out.
