Small Workspaces Lighting
This is a direct wire fixture to be operated by a wall switch, and yes it has a toggle off/on switch built-in as well. This is NOT a plug-in wall outlet type lighting fixture, so, if you have no real world experience with safe handling of electrical current I advise you to seek the help of someone that has such experience before you start this installation. This light kit requires some assembly with parts provided for electrical wire connection twist nuts and wire anchoring to fixture at knock-out. The fixture itself looks and feels industrial, not a soft look or pleasing to the touch. The T8 aka 1" diameter fluorescent 18" light provided is a disappointing dim yellow light, so if a bright light is your goal, you'll want to spend the extra $10. dollars for a much brighter replacement light tube. This light fixture is designed to provide light to a specific directed area as seen in my pics, also, the brightest replacement allowable light tube for this light fixture is in use. I wouldn't recommend this light kit for lighting an entire room. It is what it is, an under cabinet/counter light, and works well over counter tops shown in pic.

Replaces an old, failed under-cabinet light fixture
Bought this one for the kitchen (under-cabinet location) to replace the one that failed after 28 years!!. I will be happy if this one last half that long. It is thinner than the previous fixture and uses a T8 vice T12 bulb. Installation was not difficult, if you know basic electrical work. If not, get an electrician. Did not use the provided punch outs and instead drilled a hole in the center of the back due to the location of the wiring from the previous fixture. Once I did that, I knew I was not returning it. But fortunately, once it was mounted and connected, it works great! Instant on and no hum. Well worth the cost.

Direct Wired
The fluorescent bulb has to be removed to install the fixture. Easy enough, except this bulb rattled when shaken and each end was a little dark. Not a good sign. Decided to install any way. Everything works, but the bulb is verrry dim. Emailed the manufacturer (Jasco Products) which is the only option unless returning the entire package to Amazon. They replied "Thank you for contacting Jasco Products Company. Unfortunately we do not sell individual bulbs for our products everything comes in a complete package." Hey Amazon CS, if you read these reviews this is what I need:EiKO 15523 Model F15T8/WW Linear Fluorescent Tube, 15 Watts, Medium Bipin G13 Base, T-8 Bulb, 18.0"/457mm MOL, 1.0"/26mm MOD, 2.75 miligram Mercury Content, 845 Approx Initial Lumens, Pack of 1, per your website. The End

Great light
Fishtank lights are expensive. Built a frame for this light. Works perfectly. Highly recommend.

Great light
One problem: It came without a cord. Fortunately, my cord on the one I bought many, many years ago was still good so used it. I didn't see anything that said no cord. I ordered off the GE number that was on the old one. That one lasted nearly 20 years with daily use. I use attached to my desk over my computer and it is perfect for that.

This is an affordable light if you know how to install
I had to get help from two different friends to get this light installed. I finally got a friend that built houses and installed lights fixtures before to help me. He said it was a cheap kit and that it didn’t line up perfectly. The Instructions were difficult to understand too. I only recommend to qualified people for installation.

Easy to install and it works!!
I admit I'm a little old fashioned, but personally I like the dependability of these lights. No batteries to worry about and the light is vastly more pleasant.I had them in our previous home and couldn't wait to install them in our "new" kitchen.

Cheap - Defective - Tedious Installation
UPDATE REVIEW: The unit was returned to Amazon and because I couldn't find another fluorescent fixture of the same size, the same unit was purchased a second time. Just a REMINDER warning, the wires that come with this unit are VERY short....which means the wires coming from your power source must be stowed 'inside' the housing.....that includes the "wire twists" caps. Typical house wiring consists of heavy duty copper wiring, which doesn't bend easily, making it incredibly hard to fit the wires AND the 'wire twist caps' inside the housing. I ended up paying an electrician $85 to install it because I could not. Even HE had trouble with the short wires and was ultimately unable to fit the power source wires and twist caps inside the housing and the installation isn't flush to the cabinet bottom. Poor design. I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING.PREVIOUS REVIEW: Installation was not that easy. You have to disassemble it to mount it, then reassemble it as you move forward.....reattaching the part that holds the light, ballast and wiring. If you don't have a drill, a set of bits and some kind of ratchet and socket set and a small to medium Philip's screwdriver, you're going to have a rough time of it. A small crescent wrench might work but would be a major pain in the apples. FIRST, they designed this thing with the wire-hole-knock-outs in all the wrong places.....as in, none in the middle; there's one on the side and two on the back but neither one of those are in the center of the fixture's back end. If you are replacing an old unit and your wires come out of the wall dead-center between the cabinets, you're going to have to drill a new access hole in the back, center of the fixture.....or install it completely off-center to match up with the knock-out holes on the fixture! There are only three wires, simple enough, right? Black, white and the ground but they are all extremely short. Connect them all securely, cap them off, make sure nothing is exposed and then the task of screwing it to the underside of the cabinet. (This thing came with no instructions, by the way) Finally......all screwed down and screwed in. Time to put in the fluorescent tube, put the plastic lens in place and turn it on. I flip the switch and BAM!!!!! Now what? I triple-checked EVERYTHING before mounting it to the cabinet. I turned off the wall switch and carefully disassembled it to see if one of the wires had somehow come loose during installation. As I removed the last screw holding it to the underside of the cabinet. I very, very SLOWLY removed the part that exposes the wiring.....expecting to see one of the wires had come loose. NOT! All three wires were properly connected, secure and not exposed in any way. Black on black, white on white, ground on ground. All I can figure is the ballast was defective. I returned it and now currently shopping for a different brand. I thought GE was supposed to be good but I don't think they make these anymore....another company makes it using the GE name. Good luck!

Good stuf.
Works well. Used as under cabinet light and hardwired to a switch in a basement apt kitchen.

Decent lights with a but
I bought 3 of these lights as a "near match" item since I had some older GE lights above my kitchen sink and along a separate kitchen counter (1 above the kitchen sink and 2 above the counter daisy chained together). They were nearly the same dimensions as the ones I had (off by about 1 cm) so there was no need to worry about what was behind the old light as it would cover up the entire space (i.e. no unexpected painting job once I replaced them). They did the job as the older ones I had were magnetic ballasts and made a noticeable hum and took a second to turn on. These ones are electronic and instant on so I am very happy with that.As for install, as long as you know basic electrical, they are easy to put in (wire up the ground, live and return and you are set). The hardest part is that you are working upside down so takes some added dexterity but would be no different than installing any other light fixture. They come with some Marrettes (twist-on connectors), retaining screws, and a mini 3/8" strain relief connector. I knocked off 1 star as there were a few headaches as I did the install which are worth noting:- the ground/green wire is fairly short as others have noted in other reviews so wiring the bare copper wire is tight- the 2 nuts behind the bulb are nice since they hold the housing cover onto the base securely (my older unit just had 2 screws on the ends). HOWEVER, on 2 of my units the bolts were separated from housing so if you try to open it, it will just spin if you over tighten it. If you need to correct the wiring after you test it or just want to change it in the future watch out. I recommend only hand tightening them!- this is the part that mainly caused me to take the star off: even though it includes a "mini" 3/8" trade size strain relief, it will only work with the small holes not the large ones but they don't put large and small holes on all sides. It seemed quite random where they were placed. In my case, I needed to punch out the larger holes and had to go to a hardware store and pickup a "standard" size 3/8" strain relief. Either put the large/small holes in all punch out spots, just use the same size holes throughout the punch out locations, or include both strain relief sizes. That would save the installer (aka you) from going to a hardware store to purchase extra & unexpected supplies! Some other general tips and notes:- the unit comes with an 18" fluorescent inside the light which is nice so it should be delivered undamaged. Getting them on sale for $26 meant I really paid about $20 as that is about how much a replacement 18" bulb costs at a hardware store. Once my older bulbs from the old unit go, I have replacements at the ready!- be sure to trace the install location with a template and a pencil. This will help A LOT with positioning the retaining screws so the light is not crooked.- the unit will work in a daisy chain install . You just need to pop out a few knock outs. Exercise patients with trying to pack all the wires in to the housing when you close it up with the extra wires as space is limited.- drilling pilot holes in the cabinet is a big help to not bind the material by forcing the screw in. Take the extra min and be sure to do that!Generally the install is pretty easy and I am happy that my units look good and have no more buzzing which is why I bought it.Good luck with your install and I hope these tips help!
