Helpful
This is a well written book. The accounts of puppy mill dogs were sad; but full of hope. I found the information helpful in the raising of my new adult kennel dog. I was able to relate to the many quirks and fears my girl displays. She is slowly improving with patience on my part.

A well written, touching and helpful book.
Well written. Touching and often depressing descriptions of puppy mill facts. [I took off one star because it seemed a bit too optimistic. That is just my take which is admittedly slanted.] I've had my Bichon rescue for two years so most of the helpful techniques are familier to me and I have used. Progress has been made but she remains fearful of people and cautious around me. The saving grace is that she loves my Lab and is happy around her. She still will not take treats from anyone's hand and wants to eat without people around. She is also not entirely house-broken. You can guess that food was used to lure her into trauma. I write this to say that not all puppy mill dogs make a recovery to "normal". PTSD is present in animals too and has lasting effects. Still these dogs can have a better life after rescue and small improvements are heartwarming. She is less fearful and wags her tail much more. I wouldn't give her up in spite of the work. She makes me smile more often than frown.

A MUST for every rescue (puppy mill or not) dog owner
Clear, concise, matter-of-fact descriptions of the conditions faced by puppy mill dogs, the lasting emotional and physical damage it does, and the heartwarming stories of people who take on the challenges of rehabilitating these dogs--what works and what doesn't.

A big "Thank you" from Lyla and myself
I adopted my maltese Lyla last October and she was a puppy mill dog for 8 years. After breeding puppies all her life, she finally found her forever home - and we are facing together many of the issues that the author describes in her book. Lyla is very afraid of stairs and won't even look at them, she doesn't look at anybody in the eyes if you get close to her, she flattens down on the floor "like a pancake" if someone tries to pick her up, she is very uncomfortable around men and she doesn't like too much to walk thru doors. Just like the book describes. We are making progress working together every day and enjoying the little things. She is now doing a special little dance everytime I come back home and walks good on a leash. Even though she doesn't know how to play, I've bought "smart toys" where I put food in and she has fun trying to get it out. It is a joy seeing her personality shine more and more every day that goes by. I am blessed because she was sent to me. Thank you for writing such a great book and showing all of us that there is light at the end of the tunnel and these are special dogs that just need to learn what it feels like to be loved and part of a family.

Great Information
I purchased this book for my aunt who adopted a dog who was used for breeding in a puppy mill. She learned a lot about what her dog may have gone through and why she's so traumatized. It's not easy to learn about the hell of puppy mills, but it is important to know and to spread the word.

We now realize some things will not be easy fixes and we have to practice patience in all ...
I learned a lot after reading this book! We have a puppy mill dog who was in a cage for 8 years and now we understand why he has so many issues. We now realize some things will not be easy fixes and we have to practice patience in all areas. We will not give up on him and love him, no matter what he does!

enjoyable and encouraging
Enjoyed this book very much. Very encouraging. I wish I had had it when I first brought my own puppy mill dog home some years ago. I hope the authors will consider writing another book focussing on some practical tips that other owners found to be useful.
