Suitable for the MySQL Certified Associate (1Z0-870) Exam
Having never touched any sort of database before MySQL, I used this book as the primary study resource for my 1Z0-870 exam (MySQL Certified Associate). I thought that it presented a suitably decent job of explanation of concepts, and that its examples were clear in describing the point that the author wanted to make with each section. While other reviewers do make valid points that this resource lacks any sort of practice exams (or even quizzes), a little initiative can compensate for that.I reviewed the areas tested on this exam as described on MySQL's web site, then planned my study around those areas. As most people retain only about 30% of what they read, I read each chapter twice. I read it a third time while typing notes from the book. I then read my notes twice. I worked the exercises on a spare computer I have that runs Ubuntu Server 12.04 64-Bit, a flavor of Linux. The book oft references the 'world' database in its examples. The database is available for download from MySQL's web site, along with information on importing it into the server. You *will* need to learn the formatting of queries and statements. It's no different from learning any other new skill - book knowledge can only carry you so far. Some practical, hands-on work will absolutely make a difference. If you're disinclined to dedicate a physical machine to this, download a free copy of Oracle's VM VirtualBox.I passed the test in under 40 minutes with a score of 88%.Chapter 00: IntroductionChapter 01: Client/Server ConceptsChapter 02: The MySQL Client ProgramChapter 34: User ManagementChapter 23: MySQL ArchitectureChapter 24: Starting, Stopping & Configuring MySQLChapter 07: DatabasesChapter 08: Tables & IndexesChapter 05: Data TypesChapter 09: Querying for DataChapter 10: SQL ExpressionsChapter 12: JoinsChapter 14: ViewsChapter 11: Updating DataChapter 15: Importing & Exporting Data

Good self-study resource
This book is a necessary but not entirely sufficient resource if you plan to complete the 5.x developer and/or DBA exams with self-study. Most of the subject areas present on the exams are covered in enough detail to easily pass if you are experienced with another database product and can apply that experience. (FYI, I have 15+ years working with Oracle/SQL Server and have dabbled with MySQL since 3.x, passed all 4 exams using this guide). That said, you will likely need to supplement the book by reading the MySQL documentation if you wish to get as much knowledge as possible from the study process. Certainly try out each command on a test MySQL instance multiple times using version 5.x (NOT 5.1 where some behaviors have changed). The practice questions provided are not all in multiple-choice format as you will encounter on the exam, which can be a good mental exercise for review, but the answer formats can be frustrating in some cases, as in the case of a multiple-choice question with five possible letter choices, wherein the answer is a paragraph that doesn't indicate the correct letter choices. Trivial but annoying.Be sure you complete all practice questions from the accompanying CD and understand why your answers were right or wrong. There are no labs or practical exercises included, although a sample schema is included from which many of the practice questions are drawn. If you are not taking the exams, this is still a good primer on MySQL.

great prep for exam
I took the MYSQL 5.0 dev I and Dev II exams from this book.More than any other book I've ever read, this book prepares you for the exam. There's no material on the test that is not in the book, another first. In fact, some of the examples on joins and subqueries are taken straight out of the book's questions on CD's; some of the tables used in the exam are taken straight out of the book's examples. I can't stress this enough: more than any other Cisco, MS, Red Hat, Sun, or CISSP book, what is on the exam is in the book if you are willing to read carefully. The questions are challenging, even more so than the exam itself. The writing is clear, as good as any book I've read. The examples are all excellent.4 stars instead of 5 because the authors can't resist putting their political views in the text. They prominently list "Palestine" as a country (unnecessarily IMO) and refuse to say "fire triggers" because of the association with guns.Besides that, it's a great book.

Way exceeded my expectation!
The book is quite big and my first impression was it's going to take a long time and it's full of useless info. But once I started reading, I had a nice surprise. The book actually covers 2 certifications (Dev and DBA), 2 exams each. I can't speak for the Dev part, but the DBA part was very well structured and each exam required less than 200 pages of reading. The information was dense enough and always up to the point. The practice questions were really not a question samples, but more like a 60 pages summary of possible exam topics.I also liked the style very much. It's very proffesional but not too dry and reading is not boring. There are a few glitches here and there (table of content is off, the CD ROM didn't work well), but they are not really impacting your study.Overall, I liked it very much and I wish more vendors would adopt that format and style. And, by the way, I passed both exams at the first try using this book only (well, I've been working with MySQL a bit in the past, but I clearly had holes in my knowledge before). So I highly recommend this book as a perfect MySQL certification guide and general reference.

Schnelle Lieferung
Schnelle Lieferung und gutes Preisverhältnis aber eine Sache war nicht in Ordnung und zwar das Buch war mit Kaugummi an der Kante beklebt ansonsten bin ich mit dem Buch zufrieden . Trotzdem Daumen hoch
