And with HDTV in mind, the TX-SR674 also offers High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and connectivity with the latest high-definition disc formats. Capping it off with Audyssey 2EQ room acoustics correction technology, the TX-SR674 stands out as one of the more complete A/V receivers in its class. Special FeaturesHDMI 2 Input / 1 Output, 1080p bandwith - ready for next generation DVD players Auto Speaker Calibration with Audyssey 2EQ - Creates an optimal listening area, not a point - perfect for families Video Upconversion to HDMI with deinterlacing - ensuring your video looks the best on the newest tv's Key technology Features: 192 kHz/24bit AD Converters: Costly, extremely powerful digital-to-analog converters , that not only boast a dynamic range of 120 dB, they process information faster and are virtually resistant to clock jitter, to ensure the best possible performance from DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and audio CD. Dolby Digital EX / Pro-Logic IIx: Home theater realism reaches new heights with the creation of Dolby Digital EX. By adding a matrix-encoded surround back channel derived from the existing discrete left and right surround channels, the lack of rear surround in 5.1 channel is eliminated. The result - a fuller 360º experience is created even from 5.1-channel DVD releases. Best results are obtained when Dolby Digital EX is used with movie soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX. Pro-Logic IIx is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic and subsequent Pro-Logic II standards. Pro-Logic IIx adds post-processing to 5.1 channel and stereo signals, creating a realistic 7.1 channel surround environment from 5.1 channel movies and stereo sources, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio. NeuralSurround: Neural Surround represents the latest advancement in surround technology developed for music and is adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcast of surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. System playback is scalable from 5.1 to 7.1 multi channel surround playback. VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): Conventional D/A conversion methods reduce digital pulse noise at the conversion stage but cant remove it completely. Previously only found on our high-end components, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) employs a unique D/A conversion circuit to overcome this problem. Data is converted between sampling points and these points are joined with analog vectors in real-time to produce a smooth output wave form. The result a virtually noiseless, smooth analog signal based on the digital source to bring out even the most subtle of nuances in your music, movie soundtracks and even MP3s. XM Ready: The XM "Connect-and-Play," is a revolutionary technology platform designed to integrate XM into virtually any home or portable consumer electronics entertainment device. By matching XM Ready® audio systems with a simple, elegant antenna/receiver, getting XM becomes even easier for home audio listeners. CinemaFILTER: The tonal balance of a film soundtrack can be edgy and bright when played back over audio equipment in your homethis is because film soundtracks are designed to be played back in large theaters, using commercial equipment. Onkyo has developed its own solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater. DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6: There are two DTS®-ES (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. Theres also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the "96/24" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models). HDMI Video Upconversion: Converts incoming composite, S-Video signals (like a VCR to S-Video equipped TV), and component signals all the way to HDMI on most models. Powered Zone 2: By dedicating a pair of channels on receivers with this capability, you dont need an external amplifier to enjoy an independent stereo audio source in a remote room. For example, on higher-end models this allows for a full 5.1 channel movie to be enjoyed in the home theater, while simultaneously sending a song from a CD (or other source) to speakers in another room. WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That's the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today's digital age, you'll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.

Quality Sound, Great Features, Some Limitations
After a long extended research, I landed on this model for my home theater needs. My unique situation I hoped to achieve was feeding 5.1 sound in my tv room while simultaneously providing music in another room of the house. After reading the capabilities of the powered zone 2 along with the favorable reviews on sound quality, I went with the Onkyo.I have been very pleased with the quality and ease of setup overall. I feed music from a home theater PC (HTPC) I built and the music and shows come through with crystal clear quality. I am connected to an older Sony HD projection TV, and the control of component connections is ideal for my situation. Now here is my only disparagement of this model. The powered zone only works with analog inputs. This astounded me. One of my major points of going with a nice, new receiver was to move to digital audio. I feed the audio right now via SPDIF and planned to get an optical cable later on. The reason this is limiting is that I cannot play audio from my HTPC on both zones, only in the main room. In fact the radio cannot play on the powered zone either. I am mystified as to why this limitation is in place; it makes no sense.I am going to test some analog cables from the HTPC and see if I can accomplish what I want, otherwise I have to keep my old DVD player attached in analog format essentially as a CD (MP3 disc) player for that other zone.

Good unit at a good price
After buying an LCD HDTV decided to upgrade my audio. Had a 5.1 system with a Harmon/Kardon, and Cambridge Soundworks speakers. Researched and watched the prices for a few months and decided on the Onkyo, and also upgrading the speakers. When the price of the upconverting Onkyo came down enough I bought it. Very good unit. The sound is noticeably better than with the Harmon/Kardon. Setup was not a snap, but not too hard. Just had to go through the manual, and be a little patient with trial and error. Also the Audessy speaker set up was easy. I'm only giving 4 stars because I couldn't run everything thing through the receiver's HDMI cable to the TV. As it turned out, the receiver had problems with accepting a DVI source. I was using a DVI to HDMI cable running from my ComCast DVR. The Onkyo wanted me to switch to component cable for the hookup. Given that, I only ran the sound through the Onkyo from the DVR with an optical cable and the video is connected directly to the TV from the DVR. Minor annoyance, but not a big deal. MY DVD player and Playstation hook right into the Onkyo and upconvert in one cable to the TV. Very nice. Main thing is the sound for tv shows is great. Onkyo has a proprietary mode for TV feed and it sounds pretty good. Also, big kudos to Amazon (as usual). Shipping was free and fast, and when I noticed two days after ordering the receiver that the price had dropped $90, I just called and they credited my account no problem.

NOT a Stellar replacement for my Onkyo TX-SR601
The first unit I bought from Amazon Warehouse was DOA which I just chalked up as one that slipped past a simple on/off inspection test. Amazon's customer service was stellar in getting me a replacement in short order with no hassles. I can not say the same for Onkyo. I bought the 674 to replace the 601 that I have been very happy with. When I upgraded to the hi-def 1080p display the new SR674 was for HDMI and upconverting connectivity. The HDMI is as advertised but my eye can't see a whole lot of up converting going on. I have 2 complaints, first of all my old onkyo had a decent remote with macros my new SR674 doesn't Unless I shell out an additional $150 for a "Onkyo Online" remote that will provide this function for my NEW!!! reciever. Secondly, If you live on the west coast like I do, be prepared to start calling Onkyo customer service a couple of hours prior to 5pm in order to talk to a real person. After two days of waiting on hold I got a guy that told me that if I wanted a code to get my NEW!!! Onkyo remote to control my Hi-Def Toshiba DVD player I should try surfing the net to see if I could Google one up. In my opinion it would seem that newer is not always better with Onkyo.

A reasonable price for a truely fine receiver with HDMI up-converting.
I'm running my Toshiba DVD into it with component video and coax audio, my old RCA VCR with video and stereo rca jacks and my Dish HD DVR with HDMI. Video output is the single HDMI to a Panasonic 1080i plasma. Picture quality is great. Sound is very good, even with my old Bose 301's and cheap kenwood suround speaker. The self adjust on the sound levels never worked, but manual adjustments went fine. The unit does run quite hot. I adjusted my home entertainment cabinet to give more air space around it and added holes to the back. The remote works for all my components basic commands, that's a first for any remote I have ever had.Update-I've now had this for 2 years. I run a Panasonic BR and cable HD-DVR into the HDMI inputs. I upgraded the sub-woofer to a Yamaha powered sub-woofer. I use the remote speaker outputs for audio in the rest of the house.I would like more HDMI inputs. But I still love that this is a switching unit for HDMI. BUT...the picture goes blank every once in a while for a few seconds. Other than that, it's still a great unit.

Great video quality
I made this purchase based off of the CNET rating and users reviews. I must say, I am thoroughy impressed with the quality of video this receiver can produce...even upgrading standard 480i television. I wish it had at least 1 more HDMI input, which doesn't take away from the quality of the product but did drop it to 4 stars. The other thing I really liked is how accurate the auto speaker adjustment worked. Of course this is only an opinion but it was close enough to how I like the sound in my room that I only had to make a minor adjustment to the subwoofer, everything else was spot on.If you are in the market for a receiver and don't need 3 or more HDMI inputs, the price is about perfect right now. Buy the Onkyo 674, you won't be disappointed.
