Product description NEW Combo BLUWAVS CD and FLAC FILE .com In the grand tradition of the late Roebuck "Pops" Staples--patriarch of the Staple Singers, whose influence permeates this project--Marty Stuart's selection of classic and original spirituals is also his bluesiest release to date. Stuart's guitar carries the familiar Delta sting of his native Mississippi, as the harmony-laden choruses soar toward heaven. A revival of Staples's "Somebody Saved Me" sets the album-opening tone, while a duet with Mavis Staples on her father's "Move Along Train" provides the climactic epiphany. The vocal support of bandmate Harry Stinson--a drummer known as one of Nashville's finest high harmony singers--and the bedrock B-3 organ of Barry Beckett contribute to the music's saving grace. On "Way Down," Stuart sets an inspirational lyric to an insistent guitar progression that blues fans will recognize as "Baby, Please Don't Go," while "I Can't Even Walk (Without Holding Your Hand)" sounds like a timeless country waltz. Even those who don't share the faith will find it tough to resist the power and emotional purity of this music. --Don McLeese

Rootsy Gospel Excellence
In anticipation of Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives visit to our town for a concert, I thought i would sample some of their music. I chose this album because its gospel content and I was not disappointed. The more I research Marty's recent musical odyssey the more impressed I am. Surrounded by a band of superlative musicians (hence the name), this CD reeks of down home authenticity. The sound is both retro and timeless - as all true music should be. As another reviewer noted, there is not even a hint of pro-tools anywhere near this record. Not only does the great Mavis Staples guest on one track but Marty Plays her revered father's guitar on a couple of tracks. The vocals are bluesy and spot on. The band plays loose but maintains a tight groove ( not mutually exclusive...) There is a little of the country church mixed with a little of the juke joint as well as enough of the front porch to make this an atmospheric disc of delights. I hope this is not the last foray into the world of gospel for this wonderful ensemble. I can't wait for the concert....

I cannot say enough good things about this CD
I cannot say enough good things about this CD. My husband and I listen to it constantly because every single song is incredible. Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives offer a really nice change to the same 'ole, same ole sound today. It's a little bit country, a little bit bluesy, a little bit retro and a whole lotta soul in this Gospel CD. I have always loved Gospel Music (usually Southern Gospel or Country Gospel), especially since I grew up in the church, but this is my current favorite!! We listen to it in the car and it's a great CD to take on a road trip!

Soul Chapel Live
Marty Stuart went back to MS. to return to his roots and I believe to heal, physically and spiritually. Three cd's will be issued which are a result of this trip, I read somewhere. Soul Chapel is the first. The previous Amazon reviews tell why this cd is excellent. I saw Marty perform, yesterday, on the Grand Old Opry and he performed two of the songs from this album. The instruments and vocals soared but it was the feeling, the spirit from the stage that blew the crowd away, and caused us to rise to our feet. I think standing ovations have become pat and usually meet nothing except the crowds bums are soar, but this one was heartfelt and was not "pre programed in the music." If you don't know what that means watch the reactions to music on "American Idol." Marty looks and sounds great. I am glad Marty's MS retreat was a blessing.

nice gospel music from Marty
Nice recording by Marty and his Fabulous Superlatives. This isn't really a new direction for him - they've covered a lot of musical ground; but this is their first dedicated to all gospel. As usual, they bring exceptional musicianship and taste to the songs here. I'm a big Marty fan, and I'm giving this four stars simply because I prefer CDs like Pilgrim and Ghost Train more. But no mistake, they tear it up. I love his version of I Can't Even Walk, and having Mavis Staples guest on one track is real treat. This is one more reason that Marty and the boys have been on a roll for the last ten or fifteen years!

Good God Almighty!
This may not be the case with other listeners, but I've always preferred my gospel music with a heavy dose of acoustic instrumentation. This CD definitely changed all that. Marty is undoubtedly one of the premier mandolin players in country music but there ain't a drop of mando on this album. Instead it's very tastefully picked Telecasters backed by the big Hammond B-3. All this supporting some of the best harmonys to be released by a country artist in a long time. For a long time that Marty Stuart has been an underappreciated force in American music and it's great to see him ignore this and continue to release material that is true to his heart and his influences. This CD may even surpass his "Pilgrim" release of a few years ago.Marty, thanks for the insight into your heart and being. You are definitely one of the greats.

Great
Original and excellent. Every song stands on its own. And it flows perfectly. Much more than a gospel album, but anyone looking for that will not be disappointed. Beautiful, fresh, modern but still classic gospel. Now I know why people in the country music community think so highly of Marty Stewart. This album is phenomenal.

I purchased this CD for my Sister in Law, she was so excited and happy that I found one of her favorite songs, I Can't even Walk without you holding my hand.
