Indispensable
I got a Surly LHT which comes standard with drop bars and bar-end shifters. Because my back can no longer handle drop bars I switched to upright bars. Because I wanted to keep the bar-end shifters I got a set of these Thumbies. These do exactly what they're intended to do. The Shimano barcons, incidentally, shift smoothly and accurately. I keep them on "friction" mode. In conjunction with these Thumbies I can shift pretty much as smoothly and accurately as I did with index shifters. If you want to mount bar-end shifters on upright bars such as mountain bars these Thumbies are indispensable.

Solid construction
These clamps are pretty straight forward. They're expensive but they are well made.My project is swapping out the drop bars on a Long Haul Trucker for trekking bars. The 2013 and 2014 LHT comes with Microshift end shifters, not Shimano like the previous years. The Microshift shifters do not fit these clamps. The cable hole in the clamp isn't even close to the cable groove in the shifter. Make sure you know what you've got before ordering.

6 months of solid use and going strong
Switched from Dura-Ace 9-speed bar-end shifters to these, using those components, to outfit a new hamster-style handlebar. Can be over or under the bar, and make a decent rest spot to tuck the elbows in. They do stick up, so if you really want aero, I'd suggest moving up to 10 or 11-speed and RTC shifters with 90-degree adapters.I have heard of difficulties with wear or clicking, but that's been attributed to inadequate tightening of the top screw.

If you tour these are the way to go
I had regular shifters that just looked way to complicated (things can break or just plain be a problem)and when you are in the middle of nowhere, and when that happens you will have to use your brain big time. These bring back long lasting and what works. I was a little hesitant because it seemed like a step back but no way. These, properly positioned, work great and the bar ends, if you can find them for your speeds, surprise you as how great they work.

I'm very happy with them
I upgraded to a Jones H-Bar from the drop down bar that came with my Surly LHT, I didn't want to mothball my MicroShift bar end shifters, so I bought these thumb mounts. I'm very happy with them. Also, they came as a hinge mount.

Robust and wonderful just as you'd expect.
Finally got those bar-end shifters off the recumbent where my legs would hit them every. single. time. These are fantastic.
