Cole & Mason Derwent Grinder, 7.5" Pepper Mill, Stainless Steel

This is an outstanding pepper mill. It grinds the peppercorns uniformly and consistently and is very comfortable to use. You can select from a range of grinds, from coarse to fine, and all work really well. I ordered this with a wood handle which provides a good grip and it looks great. It is easy to refill -- you just pull off the top, fill it (if you have a small funnel that makes it easier), and pop the top back on. Highly recommended. One note: It comes partly filled with peppercorns and they made me cough when I used them, so I discarded them and bought some highly rated organic peppercorns and use those instead.

Our nice OXO grinder we had for years finally gave up the ghost and this one came recommended. It's a bit pricey for our retirement budget, but with all the good reviews, we figured it was worth it if it outlasted us ha. Grinding is easy and the piece size is true to the easy adjustment. HIghly recomended. We're pleased with it.

Quality item. My last one (which was cheap) broke and didn't last... the pepper was dispensed very lightly. This one is substantial and the pepper is dispersed quickly and the flakes are big. I love the design. Simple yet beautiful and classic. Going to get the one for salt too.

UPDATE: 12/8/19. Sadly the glass/plastic body simply snapped off one day at the bottom. Didn't drop it, didn't abuse it, it just broke. Peppercorns everywhere! I admit I use it everyday and perhaps I simply wore it out, but that's no excuse. Call me stupid, but because the grind is so good and consistent, I ordered another. It really is a good mill, I just wish the quality control on the body was better. But I must bump it down from 5 to 4-stars. I wanted a pepper mill that can handle medium and large peppercorns because anything can handle the small peppercorns. This handles the various sized corns with no problem. I also wanted a mill that was easy to adjust. This has a ring on the bottom that you simply turn. It will not turn accidently, but it is not at all difficult to move. This leads to the third item on my wish list, a consistent grind. When I set it on a grind, I cranked out about five turns and looked it them on white paper. Then I went to another grind. Each one resulted in the vast majority of the individual grinds being the same. The coarse was course, the fine was fine. What I usually see is that the coarse ends up with multiple sizes from very fine power to large chunks. Not with this one. Tip: if you go from very fine or fine to coarse, take one crank away from the food and then start. This clears out the grinder. This grinder also holds quite a bit of pepper so you are not spending time refilling. When you do refill, just pull the top, fill and off ya go.

This grinds pepper! Fine to coarse, it does it well. You do have to have clean hands on the finest grind as there is a load of resistance. If the cat knocks it off the counter, well you have pepper everywhere as the top comes right off.

Update: I received a refund from the seller due to the item's condition, which was very generous - great customer service. I think I can comment on the quality of the grinder now and ignore the shipping issues (in the old review below). Updated Review: Build Quality: 4.5/5, plastic barrel knicks this down from 5/5. Feels sturdy in the hand. Aesthetics: 4.5/5, again a slight downgrade due to the plastic. Otherwise it looks and feels nice. Action: 5/5, Grinds a LOT of pepper per turn. Feels smooth. The grind sizes are very good - the finest size is very fine. It is easy to change grind size. A quality product. My only complaint was how it was shipped, hopefully they change that in the future. The pepper grinder was shipped in an envelope with no packaging, so it arrived damaged. Since it was just in the envelope with no protection, it fell apart in transit. The central axel that turns the grinder is bent out of alignment due to shipping damage - it still works, I think, but it is not in new condition. Also, it was full of pepper when it was shipped, so the pepper fell out in transit and it and the various parts of the grinder scratched the stainless steel. All the pepper was just loose in the shipping envelope, but I wasn't necessarily planning on using it anyway - I'm more concerned about the damage to the item. It seems like a decent grinder, but I paid $50 for it and it arrived in essentially used, slightly damaged condition.

Love the look of the pepper mill and all the settings. Very efficient to use, great quality, not too tall.

This is the second one I bought so I could have a set. It’s top quality and should last a long time. It doesn’t arrive in any sort of packaging though. Nothing to protect it during shipping. For the price it should at least be shipped with some sort of padding.It IS glass, after all.

solid grinder with adjustable coarseness, does the job well

I bought this as a gift for my partner who loves to cook and uses a lot of pepper in his dishes. So far it works great. It grinds very smoothly at all settings, from fine to coarse. It's a good size... fits easy into anyone's hand without being cumbersome. The mill has a nice, clean design and looks great on the counter. We have not refilled it yet but hopefully we don't run into any problems. We expect it to last for years. Now that we know we like it, we are waiting for the salt grinder to go on sale so we can have a matching set.

I like the look and feel of this product. It provides a very nice even grind which is just what I want. I do find it a bit stiff on the finer settings. I created a 3D print model of a filler funnel for it on Thingiverse.

I have used dozens of pepper mills in my life, between cooking professionally and as a hobby. This one is by far the easiest to refill, the easiest to select a grind size, and the easiest to use. Granted you don't get the same level of fine control over the grind setting as you do with a traditional mill, but for 99% of people the settings on this will cover every need anyway. And since you don't need to unscrew the cap to refill it, you don't lose and have to re-find your grind setting each time you replace the peppercorns in it. It still works as well now as the day I bought it, and I'm debating buying 2-3 more to have some peppercorn variety available. By far the best one I've ever used. Not to mention it looks great, it's just a classy piece of design. 10/10, my only concern is the long term durability of it since the part that holds the cap on to the body is plastic, but I won't know how well that hold up for another decade or two. As far as I can tell the plastic they use is very high quality though.
