It can be used on adults. Unfortunately, it’s very unreliable

how do you open it to change the batteries?

We just did this to change the batteries after about 10 years with the same one. You place your finger on the top of the back where the small lines are and push down. It should pop out. It takes 9V.

There are warranties. Five years or 3 years depending on the models.
