How are these used? Do you use medical tape to fix them in place?

No tape needed for a tracheostomy. You just slide the split bandage/sponge over the back of your tube and it fits neatly behind your Trach. Have used these sponges for years. I can't imagine why a split sponge would be necessary for anything other than what I use it for and why it would ever need tape; this is what they gave me in the hospital and this is what I use.

Are these good for use on top of a non adherent pad to stop bleeding?

We used these for around a feeding tube-they are cut for a drain tube or feeding tube so I would expect they are more expensive than regular gauze pads. I'm not a medical professional but I think there are other products better suited for purposes of your question.

How many sponges comes in 1 box? 100?

50 peel open, reclosable packets, each packet has two (2) 6 ply sponges. On effect there are 100 sponges.

are they gauze or sponge?

They are referred to as "gauze sponges" because they are made from gauze and act like a sponge which absorbs moisture. A "drain sponge" is the same thing: it is made from gauze and soaks up moisture from a wound or opening.
