Yes, it is possible. You would need to make an adapter spool to keep the 18650 centered in the battery barrel.

What is the diameter of the main body (where the batteries are housed and where it says "Explorer")?

The main body measured over the knurled center area "Explorer area" is 1.420 inches, at the larger flared magnetic base is 1.640 inches, the lamp head is.790 inches. Great light, strong magnet and awesome flexi neck. Lamp stays in position where placed. Perfect level of illumination for working on my small Sherline lathe

Can the base hang magnetically sideways? Or only vertical?

Yes, the magnet is powerful enough to allow you to stick it to the front of your refridg (or any other vertical iron-based surface) and adjust the flex straight out

How stable is the lamp on a nonmagnetic surface?

This lamp will not stay upright on a non magnetic surface.
