Great jian for HEMA- or WMA-style sparring.
I was very apprehensive to buy this because I could find so few reviews on Amazon or other stores. I'm glad I did though. The sword is exactly as described. It is made to be a sparring version of the Hanwei Cutting Jian, which I also own and the weight and balance are nearly identical (the hardware is identical). The blade is a bit stouter than many of the one-handed blades used in groups like HEMA or WMA. It's much closer to the longswords that those groups use. If you are using a weighted flex standard, this sword deflects 1/2" with a weight of 6oz hanging from the tip. If you aren't familiar with that standard, let's just say it doesn't flex much at all. The tip is rolled over and has a large surface area, so a controlled thrust is uncomfortable at most - a hard thrust will bruise, but it would take a lot to really injure. A cut on the other hand can hurt with how thick this is. Hand and head protection is a must. I would not recommend fencing gear. I would expect the sword to damage them pretty quickly.

Excellent sparring Jian designed for historical swordsmanship
We use this sword in our Chinese Historical Swordsmanship classes in NJ. We used custom made wooden jian for 15 years and recently switched over to this. I consider the steel training jian to be a significant improvement. The jian is solid, well balanced and is well designed to accurately provide characteristics as close to a live blade as possible. It's edge is flat and it's rolled tip is a major plus. We add a safety tip over the rolled tip so that it will not pass through the bars of a kali helmet. Students in our school use either Kali helmets or heavy fencing helmets. In addition, if sparring is practiced appropriate armor is recommended. HEMA offers options for suitable protection for the body, limbs and head. I also recommend buying directly from companies such as Seven Stars Trading or Kult of Athena. They will insure product quality with no hassle.

I love it!
Perfect, historically correct weight and balance, safe for full contact sparring. Also great for safe forms practice, a way better than a floppy sword.
