Yes. When you plug it into your mac it will auto configure for mac. However it will only work on mac after that unless you format it to fat32. I did that with mine and it works with my mac, PC, and smart tv. I use it to store movies and with fat32 formatting all my friends can use it on their computers. However with fat 32 formatting you can't store files larger than 4 gb. Hope this helps.

I have an old desktop with measly USB 1.0 slots. Is this hard drive that backwards compatible?

it is backwards compatible, but its speed will be limited severly due to old usb 1.0 or usb 1.1 standards. if u have old pc, try to get at least a usb 2.0 port on it since usb 1.0 and 1.1 are both slow, but if you dont mind the long wait its up to you. To give you an idea about the speeds Usb 1.1 is around 1.5mb/s, usb 2.0 is around 20-30mb/s and usb 3.0 should be at least 60mb/s.
