Algebra for Dummies

This is NOT an algebra textbook and it was never meant to be one. It's meant to SUPPLEMENT a textbook. I have an extremely hard time understanding math books and math teachers. I've always been that way. I've repeated Pre-Algebra and Algebra so many times it'd make your head spin. Well, this gives me a second explanation to turn to when I don't understand the one in my Algebra book. I own or have owned a total of over twenty "...For Dummies" books and this is the best of them all. The explanations in this book are the clearest I have ever seen. The author is a master at making things easy for me to understand. She gives me confidence that I never had before.

As a high school student, this book is much needed. My mom ordered this for me on 1/21/14 and it was at our mailbox by 1/24/14. I was very glad for the fast service and the fact that the book wasn't damaged or lost in the mail. I find the book itself very helpful to me as it explains common algebraic terms and demonstrates the steps to solving many types of equations. Very glad to have ordered this. Hope to buy from amazon in the future.

I was expecting more from this book. Unlike the other "dummies" books, this one wasn't very helpful. Not many pictures and lots of words, which in math, doesn't really help. I wouldn't recommend it for visual learners. As for the book itself, it was in decent shape. It was well used, but that's what I had paid for. It arrived within the set days. Overall, not a good decision for college algebra.

I bought this book for a better self-teach than what my Grandson's teacher teaches. I needed to refresh myself so that I can better help him understand what he is having a hard time understanding. I recommend this book if your student isn't getting it. It starts with a refresher in basic math/pre algebra and each chapter builds on the previous one. All of the definitions and terms are explained in detail with great examples.

I got these to study for my state exams here in Oregon. I love this book and it's so very helpful. I also use this a lot to help study for my college Algebra class. It helps to go back to the fundamentals. If you need to study or cram for a test, this is a good book for it.

A book is a book, is a book about algebra is a book that i will never read. Maybe i should of let my wife review it. It shipped kind of quickly. I think....

I bought this book to help my grandson to help him get better grades in math , it worked fine . His grade went from a D to a B+

I'm not one to engage in hyperbole often, but this book likely changed my life. Without it I don't think I would've had the confidence to make it through my college algebra class and other higher level maths, which are a must take for a science major. Anyone out there thinking they can't do math trust me you can't be any worse than I use to be, give this book a try. It is written for people like you and me!

I bought this along with the same author's Trigonometry for Dummies and Algebra II for Dummies. There are overlaps with Algebra II and this book will probably suit most needs up to A/S level. Mary Jane Sterling writes very well, with clear step-by-step instructions and little reminders of facts previously covered. She has a huge depth of teaching experience and it really shows - interesting little facts are included to engage and keep attention, with reinforcement of the basics throughout. This writer loves maths, she can teach it as an enthusiast but without losing clarity for those who are maths-phobic, a really rare combination. Very little existing mathematical knowledge is presumed, and in the usual Dummies style, the most helpful information is targeted. The fact that the book was originally written for an American audience presents few problems. However, if you would like a specifically UK/Irish English guide, Dr Graham Lawler's wonderful Understanding Maths has an excellent section on Algebra. It doesn't go quite as far as Algebra For Dummies, hence my purchase of this book. I'm glad I bought this.

Seems to cover all the bases and book arrived when promised.

A good rererence to remember the details.
