I expected a more engaging read

As is the case with many of Rita's works, they tend to border on pedantic and dry written material that doesn't truly engage the reader in the project. After a somewhat tedious read of the work, I felt it lacked much of the insight that I would have expected from something for which I paid the full price. Though that price has reduced greatly from $69, for a 336 page book, I'm not of the belief that the information contained is all that groundbreaking, nor worth $43 as of this writing. If you're reading this because of a PMP recertification requirement under Category 2-SDL, it fulfills that requirement in a rather dry and disengaged manner. Cheap route to 15 PDU's? Yes, though there are many that are even cheaper. Meaningful and worthwhile? I felt it lacking, and laborious.

Good Summary of Risk Management & some useful tricks

When I studied to take the PMP test three years ago, I couldn't find much written on risk management that was well organized and reasonably comprehensive. This book contains in one place what I was able to assemble on my own from myriad sources -- enough to get a near-perfect score on the risk management section of the certification exam.In addition, there are "Tricks of the Trade" that I have already applied to a current project. For instance, a trick from the book is putting risks directly into the project schedule; I turned this around and referenced tasks in the identified risks and was able to make some progress with management for the first time. You can assemble the pieces yourself or you can buy this book. I know which I would do if I could do it over. The tricks are a plus.

Finally an in-depth text on Risk Management

Rita Mulcahy, whose PMP Exam Prep book and material has helped many people pass the PMP exam, has come through again -- this time with an in-depth study on Risk Management. As expected, the book observes PMI standards, but more than that, it shows how risk can be managed effectively in the real world, using specific examples.Lack of effective risk management is one of the leading causes of project failure, and all too often, risk management is ignored altogether - perceived as an expensive burden. This book takes a realistic approach, examining both full scale risk management (including quantitative methods) and the minimum effective risk management needed for project success. In many industries, that's all that's needed.Best of all, it offer dozens of examples of real life risks and risk responses across a variety of industries. All in all, highly recommended for anyone needing to develop risk management processes or trying to improve their risk management skills.

Project Risk Mangement - Demystified

I must admit that this book titled "Risk Management: Tricks of the Trade for Project Managers" by Rita Mulcahy not only demystifies some of the gray areas in Risk management, but also conforms to the Guide to the PMBOK of PMI,USA. Though I enjoyed reading your entire book in general, I appreciate the following points, in particular, which in my opinion will not only enhance the competency of the PMPs but also, serve as a good reference material in the years to come. 1. A risk can not have probability rating 8 or higher, in which case it is considered a fact and should be included in the WBS as a work item. 2.Over all Project risk score should be less than 50. 3.Risk Probability -Impact matrix ( PI matrix) and risk score tables have been explained in an easy -to- understand style. 4.Tips like "Many risks will not occur simply because they have become known ( to the respective team members) and let as many people appropriate know the risks identified on your project by putting the risk score on the Gantt chart". 5.Response strategies for Opportunities (viz. Exploit,Enhance Accept, and Sharing) which have not been addressed in the guide to PMBOK. 6. Tables in the Appendix giving list of Opportunities and list of Risks in Cause-Risk-Effect format is a unique feature of this book. Thanks a lot, Rita , for bringing such an easy-to-read book aligned to the guide to PMBOK on such a gray area as Project Risk Management. This book will surly serve as a good source of reference for the practicing Project Managers and a good study material for PMP Certification exam candidates as well.(...)
