Great!
Lovely. Nice and comfortable. Twin size was bigger (in a good way) than expected. Plenty big enough for my height (4”11) and supportive for my weight (108lbs). Lots of room. Sometimes I need a nap away from the noise and others so I use this to lay down in my office (I work from home). Soft cover layer. Great materials and firmness. No smell at all when I opened.

Have used for 4 months now. love it
This matters is awesome for several reasons. 1) OPENS SPACE IN ROOM: it really opens the room up. i just kept seeing how much a bed swallows space in a room. i roll this japanese futon mattres into a makeshift sofa couch during the day. i've been loving having that space now. 2) BETTER ON MY NECK AND BODY: I'm a 58-yr-old woman, and it's good for my back and body. It has been very comfortable. i don't have problems with tingling in my hips and thighs and shoulders/arms anymore like i did with a regular mattress. (and my formerr mattress was a pretty good quality). 3) CLEANER FEELING: it makes me keep up with some better hygiene habits bc you are supposed to air it out 1x week (at the minimum hang over a chair, and better is when you can put it in the sun in the backyard or at a window). Because i sleep with it on the floor this makes me run the vacuum in my room 1x week also before putting the aired-out futon mattress back on the floor. so even though it's a little more maintenance thana regular bed I like it since airing it out makes it feel so clean. Plus, that gives me the structure and makes me run the vacuum in my room and change my linen (when before i didn't often enough 😬). 4) BETTER QUALITY SLEEP: i'm sleeping without having to wake up from pain and tingling in my legs and arms and without lower back pain. So i get deeper sleep and wake up more rested. plus because my sleeping space is cleaner and better maintained, I know that is helping my sleep and mental health. As far as thickness, like i wrote, it's very comfortable and good for my body. as far a heat retention, i haven't noticed this mattress holds heat (at least not any more than any "regular" mattress). I run hot (woman in late 50s) so I have found these solutions when i had a regular mattress that i still use with this futon mattress: a) i wash or at least rinse off in a quick shower at night, cool water at the end, to clean out pores b) run a fan and keep room temp cool, c) use 3 layers of sheets on top of the mattress (underneath me between me and the mattress) and 2-3 sheets layered with a blanket on top of me.

Absolutely amazing shikibuton that's comfortable and easy to fold.
I bought this shikibuton after trying a few mattresses (Nectar, Casper, Sealy Response, Simmons, and most recently Zinus) that simply didn't work for me. It's probably stress at work because of busy season, but I've been getting an hour or two of sleep before constantly waking up. It's a vicious, never-ending cycle until I have to wake up for work. After doing some research, someone online recommended getting a shikibuton and sleeping on the floor (on top of a mat). This was such a weird concept to me because I slept on a mattress and frame/boxspring my whole life. However, I was desperate and decided to give this a try. Thankfully I did because I've been sleeping like a baby and feeling so energized whenever I wake up. It did take a little getting used to the first few days though. Once I did, I don't think I can go back. I have even more projects and stress piling up at work, but I can get a full sleep in before waking up. This shikibuton is the perfect combination of comfort and firmness when used alongside my floor mat. I still find it hard to believe because it's so thin compared to traditional mattresses but it somehow just works. To make it even better, the shikibuton is easy to fold and put away. I have a four story home in the city and sometimes I am too lazy to go down 2 flight of stairs from the master bedroom to my office room/yoga room on the first floor if I want to get some workout in. In less than a minute I can fold my shikibuton, put it away in the closet, and setup my yoga mat. It's so convenient and I couldn't do that with a traditional bed before. This shikibuton and concept of sleeping on one has changed my life. It's so much more affordable compared to all the mattresses I tried and returned back to Costco/Amazon as well. I highly recommend giving a shikibuton a try if traditional mattresses aren't working for you. I don't have any back pain or posture issues so I can't attest to improvements from that aspect of it while using shikibuton. Plus the shikibuton doesn't squeak and slide around during adult time compared to a traditional bed.

Solid Overall "Desired" Purchase
The 3 rated features listed universally compliments at best the user(s) ability to adapt with an entirely different set of sleeping customs. The product itself exceeds my skepticism based upon self-research of multiple competitor(s) and user(s) personal experience. The rating is best described to my "own" comforts; easy fold, well designed, & finely constructed with worthy material. Myself being completely new to the foreign concept hails from the western traditions(a spring cushioned mattress). Given that I am not too unfamiliar with having my fair shares of sleeping on the floor throughout life, I'd say this futon is quite remarkable when combined with a Tatami Mattress. The quality comfort level is noticeably recognized when compared to the solid floor, therefore anyone who is accustomed to sleeping on the floor shouldn't have much difficulties acclimating. As for those who is transferring from the western custom to the Asian tradition, will have to schedule an appropriate setting of losing a lot of restless nights for quite some time whilst in the process of re-calibration. The integrity of the product was more than exceptional during the season of delivery(purchased during the peak holiday season). And as a bonus it came with a sincere print, instructions, and a lovely paper crane to which I adore. Overall, this product meets to majority of the listed advertisement. And for those who are new or wishes to try a different brand, I would then recommend this brand. From my personal discovery for those who are in search of a compatible linen cover to compliment this futon, I'd also recommend, BJdesign 100% Cotton Cover for Traditional Japanese Floor Futon Mattress Twin Long Size (Twin-Navy), as comes to fitting hand in glove with this futon. P.S. I would've rated this product higher, but it is my first ever experience with this new concept of sleeping, therefore I'll leave room for bias to those who would wish to unique review.

Firm, comfortable, grounding
Original review (4 stars) - I've been sleeping on this futon nearly every night for the past year. The first few days, I was sore, but then I wasn't. I don't use a pillow with it because that feels weird. It's comfy, it was pretty nice on a low/medium-pile rug, now I have it on vinyl flooring with just a thick blanket under me for some cushioning on my joints. I may buy a tatami mat for it because I want just a LITTLE more cushion. This all being said, I'm a front/side sleeper, even though I try not to be. I fall asleep with no pillow and my stuffed animal on my side, and I usually wake up in the morning on my front, using the stuffed animal as a pillow. I kind of relish the nights I sleep in a real bed though. The cushioning just can't be beat. ALSO! It's not that easy to fold. It will come unfolded on its own. I keep mine hung over a portable clothing rack during the day. It's easy to care for: about once a week, I wash the little zipper cover I use and I hang the bare futon on the rack. I get my little portable space heater and turn that on for a while. Since I hang it up every day and heat it about once a week, I've never had a problem with mold or smell or anything. TL;DR it's a little more work than a mattress, and a little less comfortable, but it's comfy enough to sleep on every night and I have much more space in my room than if I had a bed! EDITED REVIEW (5 stars) - I slept on a new, firm twin bed for a year after my year on the futon. I am now back to sleeping on the futon. It’s my favorite thing. Changed my review from 4 to 5 stars. I don’t think I’d describe caring for the futon as a hassle. Honestly, the upkeep I described above is pretty minimal, and I feel much cleaner on my futon than I did sleeping on my mattress that couldn’t get aired out the same way. The daily upkeep of just putting it on my rolling clothes rack takes less time than making my bed. Currently I just sleep on the futon with nothing underneath on a hardwood floor. Something I didn’t mention before with the futon is how grounding it feels to sleep on the floor like that. I really like doing yoga on a thin mat, I wear barefoot shoes; I like to feel the ground below me. This futon allows me to do the same when I’m sleeping! So much love for my futon

Been using for years- the best bed! +TIPS
We've been using these Japanese futon mats for years! I buy 2 twin XL futon mats and put them side by side, then I put a 2-3 inch king size foam topper on top. Then a king size fitted sheet. This has been our king bed for the past 4 years. It's easy to roll up each day and have room to do things or vacuum. I cosleep with my kids and this is perfect and firm so you don't have to worry about baby rolling off and falling several feet to the floor. It's much safer for a child to sleep on a firm surface as well. I'm very pregnant but still find this comfortable. I can't even sleep on a normal mattress anymore without waking up in pain because I'm so used to a firm surface which is better for your body anyway. Tips! : -Fold over or roll up each day if you have this on carpet as moisture can build up and lead to mold if you just keep it on the floor for weeks. We like to roll up one side every other day and vacuum around and under it. - you can take it outside to air it out, give it a few good spanks to get some dust out, and leave it in the sun for a bit. - it does take several weeks to adjust when starting from a normal western mattress. Keep this in mind and give your body time to adjust and figure out what's comfortable for you. This is the best value bed for money. It's versatile and transportable and lasts for years! I would say to replace every 3-4 years but it can last longer than that. Great for every age and truly helps back pain! Great for cosleeping families as well!

Very comfy on the floor if you want a really firm surface
I have slept on a blanket on the floor for about 13 years because I like the hard, firm surface and no mattress can offer that. I needed a little bit more cushion for my hips because I have hardwood floors now and a folded blanket doesn’t cut it. This Japanese mattress is perfect when coupled with a foldable gymnastics mat. It’s super firm with just enough give for my hip bone when laying on my side. If you want super firm, this does the job. If you have carpeted floors with carpet padding underneath, you probably won’t need the gymnastics mat I talked about; however, if you’re going to put this straight on hardwood, tile, or concrete, I would recommend getting an 4’ x 8’ x 2“ foldable gymnastics mat. Those are made of super high density foam so you get the support and a little bit of squish under the shikibuton. Edit: I’m writing this edit July 2, 2024. I wanted to come back and give an update after having the shikibuton for about nine months. It’s still great, but the padding has lost a bit of its cushioning capability. Over the last month or so, I’ve noticed my hips hurting a bit when I lay on my sides for long periods—even with the gymnastics mat under the mattress. I’ve continued the hunt on Amazon, and I’m going to try a trifold mattress from TANSU NO GEN. The reviews have all said the foam is very firm, and it’s 4” thick, so I think it will solve my hip issue. Plus, the manufacturer says it’s 89” long, which is great because most of the twin XL mattresses I’ve seen are either 75” or 80”. I’m going to keep the shikibuton and use it as a topper with the trifold mattress, if the trifold is too firm. With all the said, I still recommend this shikibuton. I’m 6’ 1” and weight about 215-220 lbs. A lighter person who wants a firm mattress would probably be just fine with this mattress and the gymnastics mat underneath (if you’re not on padded carpet).

Please don't buy this
This is terrible for sleeping. I never review products but this one effected my mental and physical health to the point of the collapse of my well-being. I was sleep deprived for months using this product. If you are skinny and short like me you might find yourself in the same situation. There is pressure that builds up at points like your head shoulder blades buttocks and legs. I started having health issues due to what I imagine was accumulated chronic stress. I was a healthy guy before with no issues. Please save yourself hundreds of dollars and don't pay for your health to be potentially compromised. Stick to a mattress that serves as a more reliably pressure relieving and comforting sleep surface. Especially if you are a side sleeper. Trust me. If I had to rank my worst mistakes in my life this would probably be among the top three if not the highest when it comes to health. I cannot stress enough, please stick to your set up if it works for you and if not try working with different mattresses that fits your needs. Mattresses are also easier to maintain. You don't have to air them out or roll them up as part of maintenance. There are also far more products available to protect your mattress such as mattress toppers, bed sheets, mattress protectors and the like. Most of that if not all of that goes away with this. You will have to find custom products since it is hard to find suitable products for this item. Also I believe traditional Japanese futons are thicker than this one. So are the tatami mats. If you are looking at this item to further your minimalist ambitions, don't. Don't. I beg of you. It is far better to not be a minimalist and be healthy stable and whole, than to be a minimalist that suffers from possibly irreversible health impacts from deprivation and elimination of former products of furniture that you no longer have access to, due to downsizing. Please save yourself the hassle of having to return this product and trying to find products to maintain them.

It is amazing
I read a lot of amazing reviews on this matters and was really impress before buying. So… this is all true. Really amazing mattress. It’s thinner then usual like from IKEA. But it’s amazing, soft to lay on and have good dreams. We are using it already 6 months, everything perfect. Truly recommend
