This is a fabulous photographic guide to the world of rocks and minerals, as well as how to build your own collection. Expertly written text describes the impact of factors such as time, weather and water erosion on the development of these substances, and the part played by natural phenomena such as volcanoes and earthquakes. Specimens are grouped according to their chemical composition and characteristics, and all entries include quick-reference identification checklists to aid recognition. Featuring over 800 images, this book is a one-stop illustrated encyclopedia and field guide on an endlessly fascinating and richly consuming subject. Review: Great book - Absolutely loving this book so far. It is extremely informative and not overwhelming with information ( as much as I want to learn, too much too soon can be daunting). Great pictures and I love that the pages are glossy. This a hardcover made to last. Review: In-depth reading - Item arrived on time, well packaged, no issues. Item was purchased to help indulge my interest in Geology along with being used to accent my "Blockhead" collection of assorted odds and ends (see photos). Item is "hardback" that contains color photos, color graphics, color illustrations and a Glossary in the back which gives a detailed, in-depth description of all of the samples discussed in the book. Basically, it is an Encyclopedia about Rocks & Minerals ! There's a lot of information about "Rocks" in this book..."Chuck".

An Excellent Book-Highly Recommended!
As a guidebook, this is an excellent resource, particularly for those who've either a core knowledge of geology established through learning on their own or anyone who has taken a formal Geology course and want a resource other than a textbook. Make no mistake, it is not a textbook; it wasn't designed to be. While the facts are presented adequately, many underlying processes, factors, and principles are absent. This is expected of a book of this kind. At 249 pages, the book covers rocks and minerals very well and includes very good photos for examples. One aspect of the book I appreciate is its different perspective in explaining things. This gives the reader who may have had difficulty understanding a particular topic from the pages of a text or other book another opportunity to grasp the concept/facts. The book text is very well written and "just right" for the anticipated reader audience; not too simple but not overly technical either. I gave the book four stars only because of the implication of "perfect" that five stars has, but the book is probably the best of its kind I've seen. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in rocks and minerals!

Very comprehensive, with great photos
Iโve always enjoyed rock hunting but never knew much about what I was picking up. Now getting into rock tumbling and wanted to learn more about various rocks and how to identify them. Having a good time reading through this, and looking forward to using it as I travel around the country while camping. Very pleased with purchase.

The perfect place for the beginning geologist
Iโm new to Geology but wanted to know more about how the landscapes of the American south west were formed and how the huge variety of rock types are found in close proximity. This book does a great job of explaining the history of the earth and the myriad geological processes that form the landscapes we see today. Lots of clear photos and tips for the beginner to help identify rock types. Weekend trips into the foothills take on a new focus as we can start to understand how itโs made!
