Nice wood to work with. I'm a very very beginner but it's east to work with. I did find one or two discolored spots but it didn't affect what I was doing. Slight differences in grain throughout but I've found that in most basswood. I like that these are more square. Nice big pieces

The kit consists of 4 small and 1 large wooden blocks. The small blocks are long so it limits what kind of shapes you can carve. It would be nice to have a variety of block sizes. Overall the grain of these basswood blocks was smooth and consistent. Overall a pretty good starter kit for carving and whittling.

I purchased this for my son to do a school project. His teacher also purchased a wood block for him to use. The Basswood blocks were MUCH better quality and MUCH easier to work with. I would buy it again. Thanks

I bought these blocks not to whittle but as a gift for my granddaughter. She likes the large wooden fireplace blocks we keep but I was so afraid of her getting a splitter. I looked on line for my quest but oh the prices. When I came across these craving blocks I took a chance and the price was reasonable. Success. They are sturdy, have a light wood smell and are smooth to the touch. One day I'll try my hand at whittling but in the meantime I'll order again and increase her building skills.

As a beginning carver, my family tried these pieces out for some simple carvings. The blocks come as advertised, but the problem lies in that even though we bought super sharp knives specifically for carving, these blocks are not only harder (denser) than they should be, but they split VERY easily. That's fine for when it's wanted, but you have to be super careful. Even when creating stop-cuts, this wood wants to rip. Stop-cuts are difficult due to the woods density. To sum up, this wood is ok, and workable, but I don't think it's the best, ESPECIALLY for beginners.

My husband is new at carving and this box of wood was perfect to give him a variety of sizes! The wood is a good quality...
