True Stories in the News: A Beginning Reader, 3rd Edition

I've been using this series to teach my ESL classes for over a dozen years now and I can't recommend it more highly. The stories are engaging and the kids really enjoy them. The reason I had to buy a whole new set was because I gave my old ones to my brother-in-law, who teaches English in Japan. Before a recent visit there, he'd asked me if there were any ESL books I'd recommend and the True Stories series came immediately to mind.

Excellent beginning reader. There are pre- and post- reading activities as well as discussion and writing activities for each chapter. The target vocabulary is useful in everyday English and not obscure. I highly recommend this for teachers or students who want to improve their reading skills in English.

This series was recommended to me by a veteran teacher. These are high interest stories for adults learning the English language. Adult students enjoyed reading these stories, answering the questions, and discussing what they read with others. I even enjoyed reading the stories.

Adult-interest, simple stories provoke discussion and interest in reading. I personally don't like the fill in the blank comprehension questions; but one of my two present students loves them; so she does the exercises out loud..

I love the True Stories reader series. You. Can use them straight from the book for more motivated students, or make multiple reading activities to develop the stories.

It is relevant. It is of high interest. My tutor likes it very much. It has a number of very good writing activities in it.

中学生で英語を始めて半年ほどの生徒たちにリスニング教材として使っています。まず内容が面白いので生徒たちの食いつきがとてもいい。難解なようでも同じ内容が表現を変えて言い直されるのでなんとなく理解できます。長さも集中して聞いていられる程度なのでレッスン最後のお楽しみになっています。

英語雑誌でTrue Storiesのレベル5・6の内容が取り上げられていたので、もう少し簡単な教材を探していて見つけたのが、最もバランスが取れていると思われるこの本。これより難しくなると、状況説明が長くなるので「True Stories」のインパクトが少し薄れるように思うし、これより簡単すぎると、ちょっと単純化されすぎてつまらない（あるいは嘘っぽく感じる）気がする。話によって当たり外れが全くないわけではないが（そこで星一つ減）、300ワード程度で短くまとまり、かつ落ちまでちゃんとあるので、このレベルの読み物を探している人には最適だと思う。
