This collection illuminates the uniquely fascinating era between 1820 and 1950 in French poetry - a time in which diverse aesthetic ideas conflicted and converged as poetic forms evolved at an astonishing pace. It includes generous selections from all the established giants - among them Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud and Breton - as well as works from a wide variety of less well-known poets such as Claudel and Cendrars, whose innovations proved vital to the progress of poetry in France. The significant literary schools of the time are also represented in sections focusing on such movements as Romanticism, Symbolism, Cubism and Surrealism. Eloquent and inspirational, this rich and exhilarating anthology reveals an era of exceptional vitality.

La poesie .. Awesome superb mind work
Wonderful repository of the collections of french poets which will engage you to the best poets from all over the france. Most importantly, ree s fluent and meritorious selection of the poets according to a fine order will help you be familiar with the movements and themes which all had come one after another in 18th and 20th century france. Superb work.

LOVED IT
I definitely loved it. Although more of the poems are written from a lover's point of view, there's absolutely no dispute that the poems will help in building up vocabulary. Also contains a noticeable literature from the romantic era.As from a french student's perspective, I found the poems well explained and translated (which are over 300).tres magnifique.

Good
Poem collection is good but the paper quality is poor (looks like printed on lowest quality recycled paper)

The translation is in Prose
It wasn't mentioned anywhere that translation will be in Prose. That takes away the charm. Very disappointed. Don't go for it.

Great for French Lit nerds like me
The poems are from many famous French writers. There's a good variety. It includes English translations on the same page as the French.

excellent - lively, profound,enlightening.
Just superb !The poems are lively, profound, enlightening. And the essays on each poet add to the interest. Many of the poems are not dissimilar in their expression to romantic English poetry .I found the poems that deal with biblical and historical subjects partuclarly moving. You won't find a better poetry book in French or English.

Scuffed edges
Book wasn't in perfect condition when it arrived (seller was Amazon in my case) because the edges were slightly scuffed, but it's not really any worse condition than what you'd see in a shop. Also, the layout of the translations gets a bit weird. The French is always above the English. It works better on some pages than others. The English prose isn't separated into lines, it's just one big block (which works a lot better with some poems than others).Last note isn't a criticism, but be aware some of these poems are quite adult.

I'm one happy woman!
I previously purchased the paperback @ $14.91 in October 2006; this is what I consider to be a treasure and I wanted to keep it in my jewelry box! It's a precious gem of an anthology by William Rees and well worth my double purchase ~ amazon should give me a discount ~ this deserves a prominent spot in the library and eternal life on my beloved kindle. I recalled clicking on the link to have it published in kindle format, but never checked back! While checking on an amazon offer for - the French edition, the complete works of Voltaire, I ordered quite a few offers from my tight budget; on a hunch, I entered this selection and BINGO! This purchase and the Complete work of Moliere (illustrated), and the complete works of La Fontaine, I'm one happy woman!
