great collection from this long lost merseybeat outfit even though jackie lomax would go on to bigger things in the later 60s and into the 70s these are his earliest recordings and as you can see some where holed up in a vault for 30 + years so it is great to have them included on this great collection along with the few 45s the undertakers put out back in 64 and 65.

Another gem from the star club Germany days. In the fickle world of popular music it never seems to amaze me that often good hard working artists fall by the wayside and other less talented become stars. Getting the right breaks with the right people at the right time isnt easy but i congratulate Amazon for bringing these artists to the masses.

The Undertakers were well known by the Beatles in Liverpool . Great music !

Jackie Lomax is a long-lost/never found gem. One of the best white R&B/soul voices to have come out of the sixties and seventies, he was unappreciated at the time and unheard of today and what a shame that is for lovers of great blues/soul/pop music. He started out as the lead vocalist and bass-player in the Undertakers, the rockingest, stompingest live act to come out of Liverpool (and that includes the Beatles). They were signed to Pye Records at the height of Merseybeat but were mismanaged and badly advised, especially in relation to which tracks would best represent them on singles: all those singles are here, and apart from JUST A LITTLE BIT, their only chart entry, every B-side is stronger than the A-sides foisted upon them by their record label. They failed to make any commercial impact and after a spell in America they split up. In addition to the eight sides issued as singles by Pye and both sides of their only US single, this CD contains an album's-worth of material recorded in 1965 but never released until UNEARTHED. British R&B, pop, prototype Freakbeat, whatever category the tracks might fall into, it's a beautiful noise and best appreciated at high volume. Wonderful stuff.

The Undertakers my favourite Merseybeat band. Mashed potato an all time favourite taken to new hights with the incredible voice of lead singer Jackie Lomax. Great sax playing too.I used to watch these guys play in The Cavern Club back in 63 they where so good.Not all the tracks are classic but highly recommended for any Merseybeat fans

Jackie will be appearing at the Bowlful of Blues this August,2005 in Ojai, California. He is a local resident but Robben Ford takes the top spot.Many U.S. Beatles fans know him for his version of George'sSour Milk Sea, a White Album era Apple release. This excellent release of earlier material completes that picture.

In the early 60s This band were one of the biggest in Liverpool,they were always a big attraction when doing live gigs.This album shows why,it is a brilliant collection,I remember being surprised in the 60s when they failed to get the nationalsuccess they deserved,Jackie Lomax was a brilliant front man and the band were terrific instrumentalists.A wonderful albumby a great band.

I had read reviews of the band and as "Just a little bit" had always been one of my all time favourites, I decided to buy. I have been disappointed as to the quality and selection of the compilation. Too many of the songs are lightweight and all too forgettable. It is a nostalgic step back in time but did not make me feel that this was an iconic band in any way. I'm sure locally they were but as with many excellent live bands, (Zoot Money and the Big Roll Band being a classic example), their transition to the recording studio was not as successful. I would have liked to have been convinced by this CD but sadly wasn't.

Undertakers are one of the most forgotten groups from the sixties and it has been nearly impossible to get a CD, but I found this and I can recommend it very honest to the 60 music...
