Summary:0About the Author:•0Author:Nancy LarsonIllustrator:0Publisher:Steck-Vaughn CompanyPublished Date:06/01/1994156577017X This is a Math Homeschool kit grade K. The kit is a teacher edition and a meeting book. Review: Great math curriculum for homeschoolers - Being new to homeschooling my wife and I were very nervous about the whole business. The Saxon Math curriculum has been a wonderful help in building our confidence. Things which we especially like are - 1) The way it builds on the concepts already learnt, with a suitable degree of repetition to ensure reenforcement 2) The "teacher script" concept, which means that even as a first timer you really can't go wrong 3) The breadth of topics covered right from the start, including number recognition, arithmetic, dates and times, money and geometry I've seen reviews complaining about the inflexibility, because of the "daily meeting" concept which has a set number of lessons per month. Others have complained about the fact that it uses US money. We've been able to adapt the lessons quite easily to a slightly different timescale and to use a different currency (UK pounds, with a little bit of education on Euros and US dollars thrown in for good measure). Since math is only one of a number of subjects we are teaching we find the lessons are a suitable length for the age of child. Our elder daughter is making very good progress thanks to Saxon, and our younger one (who is only just turning 3) is already starting to pick up some of the concepts as well in so much as we may need to skip Math K with her altogether when the time comes. So if you are homeschooling, I'd thoroughly recommend Saxon to you. One thing though : make sure you get the Manipulatives Kit as well. While it would be possible to source all the items in it separately it will save you a great deal of trouble to get them all together (and the box is good for keeping everything in as well). Review: Simple homeschooling system - As a new homeschooler, I liked that the lessons were scripted in the teachers manual and included activities for me to do with my child to help with learning. Lessons were easy to follow with minimal to no set up. However, I thought that many of the lessons were to simple and i found it difficult to move faster than the script without losing content. I supplemented with A Beka's kindergarten workbook, which was challenging yet engaging (as far as workbooks go). I will repeat the same curriculum with my next child. As a side note the manipulative kit is a must. It is so great to have it all together for the lessons and my children use the manipulatives for independent learning.

Great math curriculum!
I have used Saxon Math for years with my older kids. This is my first time for the preK level and the manipulatives. It is what I have come to expect from Saxon math. If this had been around when I was a kid, I certainly would not have grown up mathphobic. This is the complete homeschool kit, teacher's manual + meeting book. The manipulatives kit is a separate purchase, but is used for several levels and definitely worth it.

Retired teacher loves Saxon Math
I chose this program because I have used it teaching grades 3 and 4 in public school. My students had great success using Saxon Math, and I knew it would be the program that would give my grandson a solid start in math. The program builds concepts upon concepts, and review is built naturally into each lesson. The manipulatives are great, and the same kit is used from K through grade 3.

So far, so good!
Some reviews are complaining that this edition of Math K does not have a workbook and that the complete kit only includes a teacher's manual & a meeting book. I ordered this kit and there are tear out worksheets in the back of the teacher's manual. We're only a few weeks into the lessons, but so far it's a lot of hands on learning with manipulative, so you will need to get those! I will update this review if I run into any problems, so far, so good!

Just a heads up. This is not the complete ...
Just a heads up. This is not the complete kit. This is a teacher book and a meeting book, no student workbooks. The description needs to be changed as it is very misleading to say that it's the complete kit when it only has a teacher book in a meeting book. And at that high price it's confusing.

All the pieces there.
I ordered this kit because I love Saxon. I also ordered a separate meeting book because I read a review that said it wasn't included. Well, when my brand new kit came, both the teacher book and the meeting book were inside. It is all good because I have a back-up now. I would order the kit first and see what is inside before ordering other components.

Perfect for Us
I'm homeschooling a pre-k student and this was perfect for her. We're almost done and I'm getting ready to order Saxon Math 1. Concepts are introduced slowly and reinforced throughout the entire curriculum. There's also a decent assessment guide, but it's up to the parent to continue testing if the child doesn't "pass" the respective assessments. Here's a few thoughts/recommendations: Saxon runs a year behind (maybe two is later grades). Saxon K is very appropriate for pre-k and I suspect some kids may even do well with Saxon 1 at that level. Also, if you purchase the Saxon curriculum I recommend you purchase the manipulative kit as well as a lot of lessons utilize the kit. We didn't purchase the kit with Saxon K and were able to get by using things we already had at the house (legos, candyland people, etc.) but we are purchasing the manipulative kit for the Saxon 1 as I can certainly see the benefits of having all the "tools" assessable.

Works great for people who like a plan!
**Edited** in 2025 - we’ve used it for three of our children so far with fantastic results. It’s wonderful to have solid face to face time with each child, and they learn the basics of math in. Montessori style, and they’ve each loved it. We’re three months in and it’s going really well. It’s fantastic to have it all planned out. They are simple super concepts, but because my 4 year old finds it so easy, he absolutely loves doing math. We’re going to keep going with the program - if you like to have everything planned out, this is a great program. Manipulative set is necessary. I’m so glad we have it. (My two year old also loves it, but he does a super simplified version).
