Yes, the zippers are metal. Not a lot of padding, but I think it's a good bang for the buck.

Will I be allowed to take this on a plane when traveling?

I did it two years ago, I traveled from Chicago to Colombia, and I didn't check the bag. However, at the door of the airplane, they gave me a ticket, and they saved it in another place because it was going to occupy a lot of space in the cabin.
