Can I attach a pencil tray at the bottom of these boards?

Seems to me it would be in the way.

I plan on putting a thin vinyl top on the board. Will the straight edge adjust to take the extra thickness of the vinyl top - maybe 1/8"?

Yes it should adjust to fit under the straight edge.

what is the actual drawing board made of, partical board or what

I don't know for sure but it has a smooth laminate face on both sides and it is not too heavy so I suspect it is a lightweight mix. Doesn't seem to warp, and this is the second one I have had. Some wood faced drawing boards you can buy these days actually have plastic cores with wood veneer, so not sure.
