It is a plug and play system. It works very good. I have a new Sony with windows 8.

Is this worth buying and how long is the cord?

The SGT117X appears similar to other knock-off smart card readers selling for less. The differences are that the SGT117X has a solid steel base and uses a top of the line Realtek Chipset. Cord length is 1 meter. Its weighs more than twice than that of the other readers that look similar.
