Good inexpensive, portable storage.
Good inexpensive portable storage. I like that they don’t require separate power. Have bought seven WD Passport external hard drives in the past year. Two of them are these silver 4Tb drives. Overall happy with them. One star off because they are a little slow when copying files, and seem to never power down / sleep if they are mounted but not in use. (On a MAC, freshly formatted ExFat, Spotlight-excluded). To avoid them getting too warm, I unmount the drive when I want them to stop churning. (Note: I accidentally unplugged one of my Passport drives while it was not in use, but still mounted, and it required an overnight disk repair with Disk Utilities app to recover it.)

Good product
This is a great value deal, I just had to return it because I accidentally bought a HDD instead of a SSD.

Reliable With USB C Connection
I use multiple Western Digital hard drives in my home assembled PCs, video surveillance recorder, and NAS for storage of over-the-air recorded TV for PLEX playback. I also use the company's Sandisk solid state portable storage to put back up copies of documents in the bank's safe deposit box and for large transfers to family members. When I caused an error that required me to send out one of my hard drives for data recovery, I needed to provide a sufficient size portable drive for the transfer / restoration. My choice to use this Ultra was simple, especially since it now uses the USB-C connection versus the prior odd-shaped connector used on many prior portable drives. Although this currently serves as a back up storage drive, it performed well when I transferred my restored data to the PC drives that I up-sized. The transfer was reasonably fast and the case did a good job of dissipating the heat over the hours it took for 3TB.

Reliable device, good price.
I used this and another WD My Passport external HDD to add mammoth space to my iMAC. Partitioning, creating volumes, naming them, all was super easy. Installed provided softwares with these drives (WD discovery, WD utilities) The only problem I noticed is, whenever my iMac was not in use and went to Sleep, these devices also went to sleep, no problem so far. However when I wanted to use iMac and wake it up by touching key board or imouse, iMac wakes up & works as usual while these 2 WD my passport do not wake, repeat this behavior every time. Energy Saver settings on iMac were all okay. Then I did some online research, looked into WD forums and there somebody suggested to remove WD discovery software as it is the culprit and causes problem is discovering connected WD drives. Once I did that, connectivity was resumed after every wake up. So people who are buying this device are recommended to do so, just dont install WD discovery software. Devices are fully reliable, super sleek, they do what they are supposed to do. I am using them from 2 months so far, no issues et al.

Purchased for new gaming computer
I have a new gaming computer with a solid state boot drive. Knowing that SSDs can have problems writing multiple times to the same locations I purchased this external hard drive knowing it may need enough power and good connections to work well. Until I received an appropriate power supply for the external hub I was unable to see the memory on this drive. Also the usb cord supplied with this drive is poor quality. I purchased a high quality usb cord, dual usb-c and it works better than the one WD supplied, at least that appears to be the case. I am using it to install my programs and to store my data. Games tend to get updated and rewrite things a lot, especially the gaming clients like Steam, GOG Galaxy and the Epic Games Store. So I purchased this hard drive for the space (4 TB) and to provide a high speed external drive for my games. So far so good. I will update with further information as I use this drive. I was pleased to see the memory was there as, until I got the power for the hub, I was not able to see the hard drive memory. The drive showed up but with no memory. Keep this in mind if you purchase this drive, it needs a good connection and adequate power to get the maximum performance and even, perhaps, to work. I do have an older WD My Passport Ultra that I have had for years. It has been stable and reliable. I hope this new hard drive from WD is reliable and stable for me. Time will tell.

Save yourself the money... Find something better.
This product was a great price, and it was very quick... for about 4 months. After those 4 months, this product spins, clicks twice, and stops. Looking it up and diagnosing the problem, the disc can't be read and now I have a $120.00 metal brick. I nearly lost 2tb worth of data, but fortunately, I backed up the data on a spare HD. Do yourself a favor and look for something that isn't a complete piece of garbage.

Hard drive failure after 5 months of light use
I purchased this external hard drive in order to save space on my new laptop which is a very fast solid state drive. I figured the Western Digital brand was solid so that's the purchase I went with. I have very lightly used the device... maybe fewer than 20 times since the date of purchase. Yesterday, while downloading a game from my steam account to this external drive, it quit working. Now, when I say "quit working", I should be clear that it seems to work very sporadically. I can plug it into my pc and it is recognized by the computer. I can get a basic directory of files but this access comes and goes. If I try to actually read or write anything from the drive I get an error message "Request failed due to fatal device hardware error". Perhaps most annoyingly, the device comes with its own software (WD Discovery) that includes options for checking and repairing damage. According to the software, the device is working perfectly... except it's not. So... now I have a dilemma... I have already dedicated an hour online to trying to troubleshoot this particular error with this particular drive. I will probably dedicate another hour to the same task, but I'm not optimistic. Oh - - and the USB 3 cable that comes with it sucks. It has an adapter that barely fits into a non-3 USB port. But connectivity is not the problem I'm having, I can assure you. I guess that's it. I don't recommend purchasing this particular drive.

Best function in portable drive/ multi-format use
With very good experience using WD drives, bought this 4TB model of the Passport because of A> great price, on sale for $99 and B> advertised as usable on either PC or Mac formats. Like most drives which come pre-formatted in NTSF, I expected to have to reformat for the Mac OS, then partition with a FAT section to use with PC. Nice surprise - WD has their own (at least first I've seen of such a feature) "Discovery" utility which allows you to format the Passport drive in a special version of NTFS which works fully on the Mac as well. So far, works flawlessly. Great alternative to the frustrations of dealing with incompatible formats or paid work-around utilities. The drive responds very quickly with the Thunderbolt connection to the 2017 Macbook Pro, and can't tell any difference on using with usb-3 on PC. Can't see anything to deter multi-format users from this great advantage. Only problem I had was not with the item but with Amazon: they listed at checkout the option of "6 monthly equal installments" rather than full pay, but I was charged the full amount on my card. After over an hour on the phone with Amazon's customer service, they refused to credit me for the full charge and set up the installments. 0 POINTS for Amazon customer service.

Great portable drive
I really like the design of this latest WD Ultra passport drive. It's much better than the standard passport drives and why shouldn't tech look good? The important thing is that the drive performs well. This does as it writes and reads fast over USB3 gen1 and seems to work on any powered USB port that I have tried and that's on Linux Mint, Windows 10 and Mac. The unit is half metallic and half plastic. I would have prefer for it to be all metallic but at least this is better than the normal passport drive. I would definitely recommend this if you need a good capacity portable drive.
