“More than inspirational reading: it belongs to the very heartbeat of evangelic witness.” — Christianity Today Shadow of the Almighty is one of the great missionary stories of modern times. It is the life and testament of Jim Elliot, as told by Elliot’s widow, author and evangelist Elisabeth Elliot Gren. Shadow of the Almighty is the true account of Elliot's martyrdom, along with four fellow missionaries, at the hands of Ecuador’s Huaorani Indians. About this important and enlightening book, Eugenia Price writes, “It proves that Jesus Christ will bring bright creativity out of any shadow which might fall across any life and any love.” A story that has inspired Christian readers for more than half a century, it poignantly recounts a tragic event that was presented from Huaorani perspective in the 2006 feature motion picture, End of the Spear . Review: Great Book for Bible Study Class! - This is a Great Book for Bible Class with Great Content! Review: Convicting - “He and the other men with whom he died were hailed as heros, ‘martyrs.’ I do not approve. Nor would they have approved.” This is probably my third favorite book of all time, simply because each time I’ve read it, I walk away loving Christ more. I’ve read it 4 or 5 times and somehow I don’t own it! Jim’s prayer as a twenty year old was this: “Lord make my way prosperous, not that I achieve high station, but that my life may be an exhibit to the value of knowing God.” His life has certainly been that for me. When he talked, he was one of those dudes who seemed overspiritual to the point of eye rolling. But he seriously, genuinely loved God A L O T. It was not a show. That’s why I love reading this book. Seeing his genuine love for God makes me love Him more. This quote sums Jim up. I have this one written in my Bible and pray through it regularly. “Of Jesus I cannot seem to get enough. Thank God, though, He does not thwart the soul’s desire for Himself, but only whets the desire, intensifying, sublimating.” His indecisiveness about dating Elisabeth made me quite frustrated at times. He did not find Elisabeth very attractive, or as he put it, her features were “of little appeal.” 😳However, they had a “thought-bond” that he shared with few others, and he saw that she had a huge thirst for God that might have surpassed his own in many respects. They were kindred spirits. We all know that she was clearly a catch! Yet their relationship was an absolute rollercoaster. Through it all, she understood that his indecisiveness was rooted in his desire to do missions and his overwhelming love for God (understatement). She knew he loved God more than he loved her. And that’s what she liked most about him anyways!

Shadow of the Almighty: The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot
Shadow of the Almighty is by far the best biography I have ever read. It has been said that "You will be the same today, except for the people you meet and the books you read." I have found this to be true in my life and I have grown from having read this very book. I feel you can glean so many spiritual nuggets from this book, from raising kids, covering them in prayer, allowing God to use them, the importance of eating healthy, exercise, the value of education and when education is taking the place of God and true knowledge of Him.... Reading this book, almost makes the movie End of the Spear seem shallow. Unless you know the history of these men's lives before they went into missions, it is easy to be disillusioned and think that a group of over zealous guys decided to go and reach the savage Auca Indianans, which is not the case. It was an absolute calling of God on each individual, that God had been preparing them for most of their lives (at least this is the case with Jim Elliot). Even Elizabeth Elliot, Jim's wife, had the calling on her life. They were spiritually, intellectually, and physically prepared. Elizabeth Elliot began compiling journal entries and letters of Jim's immediately after his death to begin he writing of Shadow of the Almighty, while the hurt and sting of her lose was still fresh. You will not find regret, resentment, bitterness or anger in her writing, only a life devoted to God even unto death. So while the book focuses on the life of Jim, remember it was his young, widowed wife who wrote the very words contained within its pages. What impresses me about this book, is that it is more than the retelling of Jim's life. Throughout the book are original writings of Jim's. You will see what makes his heart beat, his passions, his frustrations, his surrendered obedience, and his incredible faith. You will see God's sovereignty-His hand leading and weaving Jim's life and death.

Good lessons
§§§§§§§§§ There are spoilers! §§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§ If unfamiliar with the story! §§§§§ I enjoyed and recommend this book. I'm shocked how abruptly the missionary expedition made up of the 4 men ended. All that build up and such a short lived reward. Seemingly anyway. How little contact was made with the tribe for all that preparedness. Why were the men killed and not protected by God? But I also recognize that God uses all things for good, that the men were ready to die, and that the impact from their deaths was perhaps greater than if there was a peaceful contact. As you may know contact was made later on and the story influenced many in the missionary calling worldwide. The men and the author are great role models and it's bittersweet how much suffering and loss good people go through. We have to remind ourselves that this Earth is not our home and that greater things await us in Eternity. Rewards for all our obedience and kindness and sacrifice. Eternal life itself though, a gift, held onto as we navigate this race and endure to the end. God bless.

A Journey of Faith story
I was not aware of the incident that caused Elisabeth to write this book. She does an excellent job of researching Jim's life before she knew him and combining their life together as he continued on his journey of faith culminating in his death doing what he wanted to do. I did extra research on the people Jim tried to take the Gospel of Jesus the Christ to which, for me, enhanced the story of Jim's life. Light, easy to follow.

CAN'T. SET. IT. DOWN
Having trouble seeing the spiritual world and wonder if it's all in your head? I'm a skeptic but this book was sound. No fluff or preaching, just a true story of a Shaman that went from dark to light. Possibly one of my favorite books of all times. Fair warning there are some parts that will make you sick with the darkness these people lived in but the contrast after they encounter the light shines all the brighter because of it. Read it, share it, learn how to be part of the movement to reach the lost with hope.

Encouraging and inspiring
I have read and loved many of Elisabeth Elliot's books since I became a Christian, but I was never sure whether I wanted to read this one because I was kind of ... afraid of Jim Elliot, knowing from her other books that he had been a pretty intense and resolute person with very high standards. And even though those are good things if applied to the right cause I was afraid subjecting myself to his influence might bring me under condemnation because I'm not as perfect a believer. I know this is nonsense, but that's how I felt. Now I did read the book and am very much encouraged instead of feeling condemned. I found it especially helpful to read about Jim's struggles and times of spiritual dryness - to see that he was challenged and confused like the rest of us - and to watch him mature troughout the years. I used to think of Jim as kind of an untouchable saint - but now I know him as a man who walked an ordinary-yet-extraordinary path, trying to give himself to God as competely as possible. And that's a path where I, or any believer, can also walk - and Jim's example has set some milestones that can serve us as orientation. Finally, what I love most about this book (on a meta level) is just how much Jim longed for his life to make a difference for Christ and be consumed for that purpose - and how I can see just that happening in my own life and apparently many other lives, his story impacting us and encouraging us to live an abandoned life. To read this overwhelming desire expressed in his journals and see its fruit 'materialize' in my own heart even 60 years after his death gives me goosebumps - because it is a display of God's faithfulness and awesome ways and victory even beyond death.
