I glued them in place. Tacking will split the wood.

its is wood, so there a slight bend, but very slight. You can bend wood the easy way with steam heat so the wood becomes more pliable than at room temperature. Once heated you can bend the wood into shapes that you could not do when cold. The use of steam boxes have been around for years as you can see the art of bending wood on old buggies, boat building, furniture and elegant wood features.

Is the wood sanded and ready for paint?

Kind of rough around the edges so a bit of light sanding helps. Also steel wool the top lightly.
