What is the width of each piece?  Will each piece  fit on a 12"x12" tile?

Hi Veronica. Thanks for the question. The size of the pieces is in the product description a bit further down the page. This Chess Game Pieces Set includes: (2) Kings - 37 inches tall, (2) Queens - 35 inches tall, (4) Bishops - 33.25 inches tall, (4) Knights - 30 inches tall, (4) Rooks - 28.5 inches tall, (16) Pawns - 28 inches tall. The chess board is not included. This is a customer who has permanently installed a chess board on their property. In this case, the board is painted onto the balcony of their resort. We sell chess boards that work with this set or you can have one made locally if you want a more permanent board. The minimum size of each square should be 12" and I wouldn't go larger than 18" squares. The board shown has 12" squares. Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help. MegaChess

This set will be used outside at a middle school. are they heavy enough so they don't blow away in the oklahoma wind?

Yes there are heavy enough not to blow away. You will need to put sand inside the base of the chess pieces. The only problem I have is that some children are really ruff with them and can break the top part of the chess piece off. I had to add liquid nail to repair. Other than that they are phenomenal.

This is an image of a resort where the chessboard is permanently built into the balcony and customers who purchase this product have typically built their own chessboard.
